two pc's one broadband conection

i would like to conect both my pc's in my home to the internet one is at present.is it possible to use both at same time will it slow either.i would prefer a cable conection as ive read lots of problems on here with wireless networks.both pc's use xp and i have 1meg broadband found a site to buy any bits i need just need to know what!!!! www.ebuyer.com any one used them looks cheap to me.thanks for any help or suggestions i need it. computers not my thing .im fine if its got oil inside

All you need (in theory) is a network card in each PC, a cross over cable and Internet Connection Sharing enabled on the PC connected directly to the internet.

Having said that, it is much easier to use a modem/router as the internet connection and connect both PCs to that. This also has the capability of keeping your PCs protected (slightly) from the nasties of the internet.

I doubt that you would notice any speed reduction on the the connection - unless you are trying to download lots of music/videos on both machines at the same time.

I agree with Ian.

I know lots of people who use ebuyer and swear by them. My personal experience has been three orders each of which was messed up by either not sending an item at all or by sending the wrong item. Their returns policy is also the most frustrating bureaucratic paperwork ping pong...

I'm with Ian, use a router and hard wire each pc to the router.

i have 3 PC's connected to the internet (and each other, as the router will also allow file sharing and printer sharing on the PC's). No you dont notice any drop in performance from the shared broadband.

As was already mentioned most routers also have an internal firewall.

I bought a Netgear router from PC World. It came with a cable to connect one PC and a wireless connector for a second. You can connect up to four PC's through it at a time in any combination of wireless and cable connections. I have my desktop on a cable and the laptop on wireless so it can be used anywhere in the house.

I managed to set the whole thing up myself and it was straightforward. I just followed the instructions in the box, and I have no idea when it comes to techy stuff.

I haven't noticed any difference in speed even when both PC's are connected to the web and email at the same time.

mutley got me thinking of a wireless conection two second pc now.what is the range of a wireless set up as the second pc is about 30 meters away. i normaly find its about a quarter of what is says on the box!. with phone's that is..

I'd go with the netgear too. They tend to have a 4 port switch built in (i.e. each hard wired pc can talk to another at upto 100mbps.) Go with wiring them up via a cat 5 patch lead if at all possible, but if you do go for wireless make sure it can do WPA security, and set it up. Otherwise your neighbours *could* use up your broadband if so inclined.

The router will manage the ADSL, and free up some horsepower the old BT modem may have been stealing.

Check around the shops for prices, i have a 3COM Office ASDL Wireless router 11g with free dongle thingie for the other puter. I think there is a deal on as my mate has just had his second lot through from his supplier, he is retailing them @ £80, i got mine cheaper thou. Good kit too.

Most decent Wireless routers can manage at least 50 metres but.....you need to ensure that as far as poss there's 'line of sight' or at least no metallic obstructions. If the router is on a low ish worktop, it's aerial may be below the level of any radiators/heaters or similar, so it may need raising to get a clear signal. Good luck !
