Two stroke winter project

Get them cases split:rob

You know what Danny boy, it's so tight and runs so very sweetly that I'm going to leave them as they are, I'll replace the case bolts but I'm not going to split them just to look at what's inside for the sake if it. If there was the slightest hint that there was an issue in there i'd split them like a shot:thumb

I know what your saying but when you have it all back together and take it for its first run things may sound different, she looks like she,s had a hard life i would be tempted to rebuild the crank just for piece of mind if its never been apart and stood for a long time the crank seals will have gone hard letting it run weak, from my experiance of two strokes its always better to check.:aidan

Today I have been mostly paint stripping, then some more paint stripping then some more paint stripping ...... you get the gist..

I started with the two side casings, they are now all stripped after three cycles of paint stripper and are ready to paint. I forgot to take photographs of them (and the cylinders and cylinder head which I also stripped) in bare metal but I will before I paint them.

Then on to the wheels. From the very start I've been relishing the prospect of starting on the wheels, they were painted in some kind of coach paint with a brush over a red primer of some kind. They will be the hardest work, the most time consuming yet the most rewarding part of this project. The photos speak for themselves. The last image is after three separate applications of stripper. To be honest I'd had enough after the third and I was soaked to the skin from the pressure washer. I'll finish off the last stubborn bits tomorrow.

Here's what I started with

First coat of stripper applied

After the second strip

And the third......... they just want one more stripping coat and they'll be done

I spent literally five minutes have a quick test clean of the main engine casings with a new chemical I've sourced, it's cracking stuff which with a little brass fresh will bring them up an absolute treat. I went down to the tool shop later this afternoon and bought a selection of cleaning brushed and abrasives.

Tomorrow is another day ..............

have you a before and after ,this may be the way to go with some of my bits

I've got three days off this week so I'll be making some progress.

I dropped a box of bits and pieces off at the platers this morning, they will take about a week.

My first job of the day was to paint the barrels and cylinder head (on the kitchen table!!)

Then onto the main crank case. I've been dreading this job. Having decided not to split the cases and leave the bottom end intact I've had to carefully clean the cases without getting any crap into anything that can be damaged by it.

I eventually cleaned away at it, a couple of hours of careful localised cleaning it was finished.
Time for my first bit of assembly ... ok so it's only the reed valve assembly but it feels nice to finally bolt something to something else!

Albeit only dry assembled, it's starting to look well!

This is going to be a quick rebuild, see you've joined the Rd forum as well now, where are you sending the bits for plating too?

Yeah I bought it to 'do' it. I've been itching to restore a bike for a while, I'm really enjoying getting stuck in.

I'm using YB Plating in Crawley. Never used them before, they seem 'Old school' :rob

I'll let you know how it pans out........

Are you on the RD forum too?

Yes I'm on a lot of the stroker forums, got a few in my shed ready for a restoration job. Bit of a two-stroke addiction unfortunately (for the wife) :comfort
