I'm going to be doing a bit of camping on the 12GS this summer with a few trips round the UK then a tour of the alps.

Now I have full hard luggage, but the normal configuration I like is panniers then a soft roll tied to the back - most likely my North Face kit bag.

Now I ditched the luggage rack some time ago (although could refix) + wanted to mount the roll across the top of the panniers (pillion seat removed). Looking at the bike there is very little opportunity for tying down. There are sixnarrow slots along the rear, but they're not wide enough to hook anything in, at best some straps could be passed through.

Anybody else found a solution to the above???

i just use a bungee net, the hooks just about sqeeze though the slots, dont forget to put a little gaffer around the contact points.:D

What make of tent are you taking?, am trying to find a small two man, which packs right down:confused:

There's plenty of points around the frame and rack.

This is the bike lightly loaded. We now carry a larger tent, two full size sleeping bags and a heavy inflatable double matress. Bike handles a bit odd for a couple of miles but you soon get used to it.
Oh nearly forgot, also carry the memsahib.

I've fitted a TT rack extender that increases the area of the standard rack and makes it a better platform for tying down rolls etc.

I've also got a pair of Rok Straps which are so much better and safer than bungees. They fir the rack very well.

I do know of someone with one eye courtesy of a bungee. I was thwakked in the eye hard by one once and the initial shock was pretty bad. Luckily the hook wasn't turned my way:eek:

I think the answer is I've got to re-install the luggage rack for decent trips where I need a pack. The problem is, without the luggage rack, there's no hard points to attach to at the back near the rear light.

TEESTAR: I'm taking a Northface Tadpole tent. It really is tiny and fits in a pannier:)

I pack in a similar configuration to yours Monkey, using an Ortlieb or two accros the back. I took the hand rail off recently and ralised I'd also removed my key tie-down points.

I have Rock flat bungee cords and use the bike frame to hook into, but prefer the set of Rock flat bungees I have which come with a web loop at one end and a quick lock buckle at the other.

I've created some tie-down points from 1 inch web, looped and knotted to continue to use the 6 slots that remain available. Para-cord would do?

Straps on panniers

Gazza - where did you get the straps that go around your panniers for fixing the tent?

They are nothing special just nylon straps with locking clips on the end. They can be bought at most camping shops.
Saw these by accident while wandering a pound only shop in Notts. Cheap 2 for a £1.

Sounds like a good solution eddy. I was thinking of getting some rockstraps. They looked a bit pricey at £10 a pop but look a good piece of kit. I was rather hoping that the rockstrap could be looped through the six slots, but I'm assuming from your solution, this is not possible??

Sadly the loop end barely fits through the slot, and the buckle end won't. BUT... at that end the eslastic can be fiddled through the slot and the buckle locked around it. Too much farting about for my liking, and requires the boxes off!

The Rock bungee's aren't cheap, but the long pair with loop and buckle were £10. The others were pennies cheaper, and the winning vote on them over standard bungees is the hook type is more frame friendly plastic.

My next application of this web strapping is a solution around putting the tent along the top of the OEM pannier without having it's strap hinder pannier access...

I neglected to mention that the Rock bungee hooks will fit through the slots, but their hook shape hinders the pannier fitting.

The loops I've made don't and can even be used with the pillion seat fitted.

help you guys

For future reference - the tyre pressures are printed on a label inside the small left triangular side panel :)

:ukgser oh please, is a pic of this too much to ask at this late hour?

(oh and i now find the best way to attach my back sack with tent etc. is 2 strips parallel and a bungy through them lateral to the frame either side to stop wind blast lift...... result.... a get back support!)
