Tyre Advice on condition

Hi Folks,

Whats the thoughts do you reckon this needs changed its flattened off in the centre but still lots on the sides. Its a Tourance EXP and i have read that they can do many miles when flat in the centre whats the thoughts??

Depends how fussy you are with your bikes handling?
I would imagine that your squared off tyre will be be all over the place, tramlineing over surface irregularities and white lines on the road.
If you can live with that then leave it on.

Thats not far short of being illegal in the centre of the tyre.

Simples, if the tread dept in the centre is less than 1mm then its illegal regardless of however much tread depth there is anywhere else on the tyre.

We're in august which is statistically one of the wettest months of the year and we are heading downhill towards autumn and winter. So yes you can continue using for a bit longer but it wont be that long - tread depth matters on wet roads

As for handling - the tyre shape reflects the sort of use you make and the handling you need.

If you can put up with the sqiffy handling,run it till it's illegal. Just bare in mind to take things a bit more steady in the wet.

Cheers for the replies as i know its likley asked lots, however just wanted thoughts from this bikes prospective.

It actually doesnt feel that bad however i havent been in much rain since getting the bike in April. I think i will get it changed, that 3K miles i have done on the bike and it was at around 5.5mm when i got it back then.

What sort of mileage can you expect at normal riding levels mostly on A roads from a Tourance before its squared off??

1mm across the central 3/4 of the tyre. Look close at the centre of the tyre.....................you need to go too specsavers mate.

Regardless of who's having a laugh at whoever's quote,the biggest laugh is some numpty thinking he'll be ok for 'many miles' with a tyre in that state of wear.
Followed quickly by any other numpty trying to save a few quid by eaking out a tyre that clearly is just about ready for the bin.

And looking at the tyre wear,perchance riding a few bends wouldn't go amiss,either.

Or a tyre pressure check.

Should have proper look at what is legal on a bike tyre it is a lot less than you think.

I may need specs but you clearly don't understand the regulation. More than 3/4 of the breadth of tread is nearly new. As Tarka has pointed out it's either been overinflated or not ridden round many bends

That tyre is grand. maby the rider is happy with his rideing he asked for some advice on the tyre not his riding style. JJH

Main route for me is back and forth from Aberdeen to Inverness via the Lecht and there are a number of twisty bits but far more straights to be honest hence the centre wear. Tyre pressures always checked at least once a week and run at 42psi.

Its a bugger as i would love to have the journeys to have much more twisties but 110miles either way and only a few of which are good twists, i do try and get as many different routes each time but its limited on which ways i can go. For me im going to get another Tourance and wait for the front to need replacing then swap to Pilot Road 4's as the 3's i ran before were great for straight runs.

I wouldn't be too worried about your route just enjoy. There are plenty of bends on my route and motorway my tyers always wear in the middle am I riding wrong? If I am I'm doing it since 1976 must be doing something right too. JJH

Yep JJH i like this its very true, i love every minute on the bike and hey ho if it wears the middle who cares.

Like someone else said i was just looking for thoughts on the tyre, if im being honest i new it myself that it needs swapping..

By law, the tread depth is tested within the central 3/4 of the visible tread pattern. So for the sake of convenient maths, if your tread pattern is 20cm wide, then the cental 15 cm is measured with a calibrated depth gauge (so that leaves 2.5 cm on either edge). If anywhere within that 15cm is less than 1mm, then it's illegal.

Mr Scott will be lucky if he gets another 150 miles out of that one I reckon ....
