Tyre Dilemma

Its a personal choice, tyres are a bit like a shape code 99 to most people :D

As said I think it depends on your riding needs. and handles possibly a bit different on different bikes.

For me I went from tourance to K60 - next it will be tourance suits me best :thumby:

Lord Vador from this parish has a 12 GSA and swears by the K60 think he's on his second set.

I agree K60 is a hard Tyre with tough walls, takes a bit of getting used to and It's a good tyre, off road comes into it's own :thumb:D

each ties their own way depending on the need, slash, hairpin, crown, ring etc ;) :beerjug:

think i have the schedule for that 99 ;) Rustbusters unite :D

im using tourance ESP"s on the S10 at the moment. i use the bike all of the time except when.proper icy. I find them an.incredible tire. Even on a v fast twisty sunday they are flawless even.in the rain.

I havent been green laning yet (?!) so will prob stick with them.

I recon I'm gonna give the Michelin Pilot Road 3 Trails a go on my 1150GSA next.

Even though the feedback on here about Tourances is usually very good, I personally hate them. The front wears and scallops so unevenly that it destroys the feedback from the front end and the rear squares off into a car tyre profile in no time, and I'm not afraid to lean my bike over either! :D

Just my 2c :rob

Cheers for the feedback lads but I'm still none the wiser, will just bite the bullet & try something else along the lines of an 80/20 tyre, As ozziesda quotes here they do square off fairly quickly & I also am not afraid of tipping it in.

Sorry to hijack but has anyone tried the Pirelli Scorpion Trails, I never see anyone mentioning them? I had Pirellis on my 1100 and loved them, there are Tourances on my 650 at the minute and I hate them.

I run 2 sets of rims on my airhead GS. One set is fitted with tourance and the other had Karoos on. When the karoos last wore out I tried the heidenau k60s, aftet a week I was contemplating selling the second set of rims because I was so impressed with the k60s on the road. The tourances didn't even go back on during last(still going strong) winter.
Now I know the airhead may not be viewed as comparable to the newer GSs but I know a good tyre when I use one.

k60 are great just get the ones with out the centre strip as not great in wet mud

what sizes you need

I have the Pirellis fitted to my Stelvio NTX. The first rear lasted 5000mls, there was a bit of tread left but the tyre had squared off. I replaced it with the same again and now having just returned from a 1500 mile trip to Scotland I'm having to replace the original front with 8200mls on it. The rear has about another 2k left.
The tyres grip well enough on wet and dry roads and seem ok on loose dirt/gravel but I wouldn't use them for greenlaning.
I'm unsure whether to replace the pair with 100% road tyre such as Dunlop Roadsmart or Conti roadattak, or something with a slight off road bias such as Conti Trail attack or Tourance (which are cheaper than the Pirellis) for the gravel strewn country back roads.

I had Scorpion Trails as OE on my 800 gs. Very grippy wet and dry and turn in quicker than the Tourance. They did seem to wear out quicker than the standard Tourance (I understand that they are actually a version of the Tourance ESP). I currently have Conti Trail Attacks, they seem to handle very much like the Scorpion, but look like they are going to last longer :thumby:

It's so hard to know what the right tyres would be. I know I don't like the Tourances on the road on the 650, on the 1200 they are great as I can get right over until there is nothing left but on the 650 they make me nervous doing high speed bends. The problem is around here the roads inbetween are nothing more than lanes covered in gravel and potholes and the shortcuts through the forest are just dirt tracks. As much as I need to have grip on uneven surfaces I miss being able to enjoy the roads. Maybe it's too much to ask for a tyre than is great at both :nenau I would happily sacrifice the mileage if there was one.

They might be the solution then. What are they like horsing it into a corner?

For what it's worth :
Have mainly used Tourances on my GS & GSA's & have to say I like them a lot. Other than a bit of squaring off, which just reminds you you're tipping her in ;), they grip well in wet & dry & last pretty well without being that hard they last forever. Have had 2 sets of EXPs & really like them especially on warm continental roads but they don't last pissin' time :rob

Also had a set of the old Anakees once but hated them & dumped them long before they were worn out.
The Big Bollix has the Dunlops on his 1150 & swears by them. Might try them next

I don't intentionally take the GSA off road anymore but with Irish roads you just never know....

Never had any issues with grip, high or low speed corners. I'm not a particularly aggressive rider tho', I go more for the smooth approach:P

On my third set of TR91's and love them, great confidence in the wet. Geraldine now has them on her 650 twin and she just loves them:thumb2

was talking to the Big Fella today & a lengthy discussion on tryes i think i will be choosing the TR91s as they will suit the type of riding i do, Also have used Dunlops in the past on sportsbikes & found them good in wet conditions, so will ring around a few for prices this week. :thumby:

I'm very sensible on the bike :augie but until I get my sockets wired in it's a case of keep up or get lost :thumb2

Tom I bought tyres from A1 in Banbridge before, he was cheapest by far at the time. Bought the next set from Moto technic in Kimmage, Dublin, he did a great deal and is a good guy to do business with. Top mechanic also.

Damien I always found Hursts (at the docks not Boucher) to be the cheapest. Michael there always knew his stuff, my bikes were always a disaster, he'd free up the brakes, grease the axle and even throw in a lecture about the state of the bike all while changing the tyre :D They are worth checking out too anytime you're looking :thumb
