Tyre noise

I can’t remember what was on my GS from new, but the mechanic at Tonbridge agreed that it was awful and they fitted CTA3s. Frankly, I’d have given them the bike back, it was so horrible. Shame when you’ve spent a load of money on a premium product.

Oh please, :blast, thats your opinion, and nothing else, Noise is subjective, just because you dont like it, isn't a reason to want to hand the bike back...

You had a test ride, was it noisy then, did you bring it up, did you ask for the same tyres?...

you had all the opportunities to get what you wanted, if you didn't take them, you only have yourself to answer too

Tyres have always made varying levels of noise which changes over different road surfaces. This was never really an issue until GS went to water cooling.
On the ‘air/oil’ cooled models up to 2013 most of the air flow passing around front wheel went over cylinders and was left behind.
Much of the road/tyre noise went along with it so was never a talking point.
With the newer LC models, especially the adventures, with larger fuel tank, the airflow is partially obstructed by the vertical throttle bodies and is also scooped up by the two radiators and redirected vertically through the fairing/ tank assembly and directed towards ones chest and head.
This is great at 30°C because for once the jacket vents get to do their job.
However, this airflow tends to redirect the noise along with it too.
If you ever spend time riding in the rain, water and general muck also come through bike and end up on the front of jacket and all over my TFT screen.
But, there is a solution for the noise …………..earplugs!
The tyres have pretty much always made a bit of road noise, it’s only really bike design which has changed.
As for TFT screens, very popular with many, but just an example of cheap manufacture.
A $30 Chinese bit on your £20k bike, well, until you come to replace it.
I still like my bike, but I do sometimes wonder about so-called advances………

Thanks for your valued opinion. No, I did not expect the noise, the bike I test rode was an 1150, it felt “safe” to buy a newer model.

The mechanic at Arden’s also did not expect the noise. The tyres were replaced FOC. It’s much better, but still not as quiet as I’d like.

Fab bike, shame about the noise. Disappointing really, but you pays your money…

Tyres

my 1200 LC came with Anakee 3 s and they made a horrible noise, i swapped them for Road 5s and there was no longer the horrible noise .
My current 1250 came with Anakee Adventures and these seam okay (although they don't grip as well on the road as the Road 5s but no surprises there).
I always ride with Earplugs, if that helps......

i have a GS as road bike. Done plenty of off-roading and i wouldn't choose a GS if i was going to do a lot of it !!!!

Cheers,

Piggers

Karoo3 if you want noise ;)

That said, tyres are deffo in short supply atm,

I was inquiring yesterday about tyres -

Nil stock on trail attack 3's Trailriders were available but up £50 inc fitting from last year now just north of £300

FWR in london have two rear CONTI TA3 and were expecting fronts on Monday (gone) quoted price was £290 fully fitted.

I’ve gone (fitting this Saturday) with CONTI ROAD ATACK 3 at just over £300 fitted.

They have Michelin Road 5 (Trail) in stock to suit GS/A fitted at £280.

Odd thing is when I got my 2018 r1200gsa new even though it had annakee 3's fitted it was reasonably quiet with little tyre noise BUT BMW had forgot to fit the sat nav prep kit as ordered and it was done as a dealer retrofit at 1000 miles.

Instant increase in front end road noise making it as bloody noisy as my previous 2014 gsa, the sat nav cradle obviously creates turbulence and disrupts the airflow behind the screen and amplifies tyre noise

Fitted Michelin Road 5 on my GSA. The tyre noise stopped as soon as I left this thread.
