Tyre Plug-get you home or permenant fix?

Got a puncture in my near new rear tourance today (bastard!)
Found no foreign object in the tyre-looks like it was caused by a flint/sharp stone.Read all about it-West Wales Posse in Ridout aftermath.
To my surprise the repair plug system provided by BWM actually worked
It got me home,it still holds air-should I get it fixed properly/scrap the tyre/or leave it be?
And remember sarcasm is the lowest form of wit

I would think the BMW kit is only to get you home or to the nearest tyre dealer!

i've only ever used one once, it got me home, and then went on for another 3k miles till the tyre woreout, but i'm a tight besterd.

I'm even tighter than Steptoe - got 6000 miles out of a plug (punctured 10 miles from new). I'd risk it again on a rear but not a front. The plug manufacturers are bound to recommend "get u home only" to cover themselves.

Same here, new tourance and a puncture. Plug held no probs for 500 miles and then got it plugged at a bike tire depot in Gorsenion. £5 was all it cost for the plugging on a loose wheel.

The RAC uses the same REMA Tip Top kit that you get with a BMW. One of their patrolmen, while plugging my Hayabusa, told me the plugs had been tested in a Subaru Impreza. Plugs were fitted to all 4 tyres and the car was driven hard off road until the tyres were worn out. All the plugs were fine.

I've used plugs for many thousands of miles, even at track days on sports bikes, and never had a problem.

Rema have to say the plug is only to get you home for product liability reasons. After all, they have no control over whether you fit it properly. If you did cock it up the tyre could deflate VERY fast. Don't stint on the glue, and check it a few miles after you've fitted it. Then if you're happy forget about it. Bur don't sue me if you kill yourself!

I've always filtered and consequently ride offline all of the time. Punctures are inevitable.

Get it properly plugged with a mushroom type repair. As my trainee, Melton says, usually only costs a fiver or two.

Always found them to last the proper lifetime of the tyre.

Yet to find anywhere in Cardiff that does this as I've always had them done in Gloucs.

Nothing wrong with a plug. But I agree that you should remove your plug and have it done by a pro.

PS. Don't remove it till you get to the tyre shop or you might have trouble riding ha ha ha!!!

(that's me trying my best at speaking "In-glish") care to see a "plug/patch" cross section go to my "web site" and click on photo's. I do tire repair and from the cross section photo, you can see how the "plug/patch" repair seals the "hole/injury" and then backs up the repair with the patch.

i'm pretty confident they would last the life of the tyre, but it's one of the things i like to err on the side of safety with.

i'd ride it home, then get it professionally patched.

Last year up in the wilds of Scotland a mate of mine had his Yamaha R1 rear tyre plugged with a BM repair kit.

Notwithstanding the instructions regarding 30mph etc, he came past me at 140mph plus. Not a recommendation, but it kept him going for the rest of the week and for the ride back home to Leeds.

The other guy fixing the plug had done this several times and the success might have had something to do with him knowing what he was doing. It’s certainly not easy the first time to know if you have got the procedure right.

Thanks for the advice people,have spoken to people who have fitted a temorary plug and rode it till the tyre wore out,
If it was going to fail I think it would have by now,but I think I'll err on the side of caution and seek out a tyre shop for a professional repair,if only to get rid of the nagging doubt

URL works fine if copied & pasted into the address bar of a browser.

There seems to be something wrong with the formatting as it does not appear as a clickable hyperlink. Normally, if you type a URL into a post the software automagically does the formatting for you. I'm guessing that there is a bug in the bit of the software that attaches signatures.
