Doug's GS got a rear tyre puncture, the tyre a virtually new 'Tourance' had been pierced right through one of the 'Tread pads' the thickest part of the tyre. It looked like the perfect opportunity to repair with a tyre plugger but alas no, even thought the plugger itself appeared to have worked perfectly and instructions were followed religiously, after 3 attempts we had to admit defeat.
The only reason that I have been able to come up with is that the new tyre was too thick for the size/length of the plugs. Anyone else had this problem or got some other possible explanation.:nenau

Try using a BMW plug - if that doesn't work, try using two . I've used up to 5 plugs in one particular bad puncture.

I remember reading the thread Steppers, but I thought that was because the hole was too wide not too deep. (Oooer missus aren't they all).

And you lot ripped the piss out of me when I bought one of Slimbos puncture repair kits at the Hograost. :D

By the way, Slimbos should work a treat because the rubber plug stretches, and you just cut off the excess. Typical, I was in Abergavenny a week ago. If you were closer, I'd have a crack at it for you.

Taff these plugs stretch as well, but it's a bit of a bugger trying to stretch them 'inside' the tyre though:augie
Unfortunately I had bought my kit before Slimbo started flogging his or else I would have had one from him.:thumb2

Another vote for the rats tail type....give the tyre a really good reaming, gloop sticky stuff all over the sticky thing, ram it in and withdrawer carefully.

Your trying to get too much plug through the hole, probably breaking the plug? You could try trimming the sholders off the plug a little.
Lublicate the hole first (you'll need to be quick though) put some glue on the tool and insert it twisting as you go, then use the plug again with plenty of glue.

Another method is to try to make the hole bigger. This is not nesseserily a good idea if your planning to keep using the tyre, as it could do damage to the cording.

I've had problems with the BM plugs breaking before, mainly because they're too big for that particular job.
It is I think worth carrying some different sizes and types of plugs, or just fit TKC's. Stronger and less likely to get a puncture in the first place, and if it does it'll be a bigger hole anyway.

I've never had a problem with my Tyre Plugger on car tyres, new Tourances or TKCs.

Richard / Doug, I'll be coming back from London on either Saturday 29th or Sunday 30th Dec. If he still has a problem then and can get the wheel down to Magor services (or I could possibly call by in Newport on the way back) I'm happy to give it a try if you like. I won't be able to drive up to Abergavenny as I'll have the wife and 2 tired kids with me, but they won't mind a 15 mins detour to help out a mate.

Ring me on my mobile, or PM me if its needed. :thumb2

Never had a problem with tyre plugs. My rear Tourance has one in it, through the tread, and I have used my bike kit on the REALLY thick tyres on my Land Rover with no problems.

Just so there's no confusion this is the one we used. (Taff don't worry about the tyre it'll be fixed well before then, but if yo fancy a break near Newport I'll join you for a coffe.)

i use one of those, got 2 plugs in the back of mine. one from near new in the middle, and one just near the edge. but not had a problem with the lenght of the plug's, and from one thats at an angle and didn't have any left to trim off, but was still flush with tire

...great bit of kit - used it many times and got at least 10k on back tyre after I plugged....had no issues using and I'm feckin useless at the best of times...

What we need is a vijoe of some ex pert doin it properly so that those of us that have inherited bikes with the kit in would have a clue as to how to use it!

PS there are several picture threads on how to do it for the hard of thinking :)

If you open the packet, you'll likely find the instructions in there.

Rattails could not be simpler, even when you can't read the instruction sthat well...

This repair in Morocco is still in place and holding strong.
