Tyre pressure

Apols in advance for a bit of a newbie question, but the rear on my gs was set up as 42 (reading 42.65 from the nav), and after 650 miles is now reading 40.2. Only a small drop, I know, but just checking that this is normal? No luggage, no pillion.

Possibly due to a change in temperature or altitude?

The pressures will go up and down all the time you are riding as tyre temperature changes. Check them when cold before the ride.

All, that's a good point, the weather has of course changed dramatically (though no change in the front). I have a decent gauge - I'll keep an eye on things as the weather changes as well.

That's interesting. I have checked with two separate pumps and they both read 2.4/2.9.
The bike however is reading them .2 to .3 lower than that.

I think the pressure displayed by the bike is adjusted to a set temperature. I'm sure there is something in the handbook, but can't quite remember the details.

Go with what a decent manual gauge tells you.

Was told by my BMW dealer not to rely on the figures the satnav displays regarding tyre pressures, as it's not very accurate-qoute! The dash display is ok but a quality tyre pressure gauge is the best way. My pressures go down a few psi quite regularly. However 2 up with luggage for a week in Scotland and they barely changed!!

The pressures the bike shows are only useful to show when you have a major pressure drop so you can take action before disaster.
Set them with a proper gauge and check regularly if touring. If there's a problem the bike should warn you before disaster strikes. Don't rely on the bike being accurate.

I don't think so, unless a dealer can plug it in and do it.

And so, temperatures back up and the rear's up 42.5 again (confess have yet to check with the manual gauge). Another facepalm moment...

As has already been said, the BMW sensor pressures are not very accurate. The bike also tries to compensate for temperature. Stop pissing about and get a proper gauge. Check pressure when cold. Pressure will change through the day but unless it is a puncture don't worry. The bike will warn you if pressure drops too low in you have a puncture. I suggest you stop looking at what the bike tells you minute by minute before you turn into a jabbering wreck. If you check cold before riding you should find its the same every time within half a pound or so.

I have been feeling this as well, and having guilt over starting the thread; just that, as it is, measuring tyre pressures is about at the limits of my engineering abilities.

It's not for the want of trying mind you just that give me anything that works and I'm bound to ruin if, even though I try not to.
