Tyres- have I been stiffed???

Just priced up a pair today, £141.88 fitted and balanced at W J Woods in Southend..........

The whole job shouldn't take a BMW dealer more than an hour maximum to remove the wheels, replace both tyres and balance the wheels. That's a maximum of £60 for the labour content, leaving £230 for the tyres themselves. That's a big mark up on what the specialist tyre places are charging. Having cake and eating it springs to mind.

To Judge:

Now I know why you're the Judge!!

Your point is acknowledged and agreed with.

having been in the tyre game
for many years
the mark up price on tyres is massive
and as for fitting the bloody things once you have
all the gear then its an easy job

for people who do not know anything about tyres its is so
easy to get and be robbed
this bloke did the scare tatic you now not many people
will know about the ABS (TWAT)

All I will say people is watch them tyre fitters, tyre companys
do anything to get a sale even sell you V rated tyres even if your car needs T fitted V rated may be cheaper to fit than T rate
The catch you have up graded your car will your insurance company pay out ??????

a sales a sale as long as safety does not over rule
just think with over a 1000 + people on here we could buy tyres in bulk and have cheap tyres for a year or two

A decent mechanic would remove each wheel, change each tyre balance each wheel and refit both wheels in well under half an hour - i reckon i could do it in 15 mins with the workshop equipment.

When i was a bike mech we used to get 1 hour for a pair - do it in less and you're making money !!

When I was young(?) and innocent(??!!??) I once phoned a well known B*M dealership in the Guildford area for a price to buy loose tyres.

I was asked "Why would anyone want to buy a loose tyre?"

On further questioning it was suggested that I did what they would do if a customer wanted tyres fitted - take the bike to Guildford Tyres.

Have done as suggested more than once and always got excellent service and a good price.

tyres

Tourances at Harrys Tyres Belfast £134 fitted and balanced (including wheels out and in) by a girl who owns an R850R and knows what she is doing around BMWs.

By the way the owners handbook tells you how to remove and refit wheels and set ABS sensors.

hey all- many many thanks for all the advice. Yeah I agree with a lot of you and I do feel a bit mugged.

However.... I did go there yesterday and waved the thread under the dealers nose. He stated that on looking at some of the prices "I can't buy them in for that!".
Anyway. he got out his calculator and he bought down the price. I managed to get him down to £240.00 all in. £60.00 off his original quote. Not much I hear you cry..... Well they also refitted the Cat Converter, (which the previous owner had removed) having to use a whole new set of clips robbed from another bike for free. Ah, the power of the GS forum......

They stated that they did not buy tyres in bulk so were unable to match the prices. Well, I think thats a matter of opinion. Customer service should come first, and they should match the prices in my opinion. I of course, have never been a dealer so I am on my soapbox a bit.

As for the ABS line..... well. I played a safe card on that and went with the dealer. I honestly believe that they were not trying to get me. But they could have been a bit more open. I.e. " go to the tyre dealer down the road, they can get them cheaper than me" I would have respected them for that.

Anyway. He could have told me to sod off when I said I wasn't paying the bill and wanted a reduction. He didn't.

The moral of this story?????
Dont believe all you are told by a dealer.

Remember hindsight is a wonderful thing. If I had it, I would have won the lottery last week.

It's good to see you recieved a reduction and some goodwill work done...

They're still spinning a yarn on the prices though... My mechanic works out of an old dogs kennel and has always done a good deal on tyres and he just buys them from a distributer.

This dealer has been named and shamed... and hopefully will now understand the power of the internet.

FWIW, the price you ended up at is about what Hughenden used to charge.

I asked about the price of a new rear shortly after North Oxford opened and thought it was expensive (and went elsewhere) but, to be fair to them, they were still sorting out their sourcing (and I expect still are) so they may not yet have got the best prices.

On the couple of things I have used North Oxford for, I thought they were pretty reasonable as BMW dealers go.

if you go to a main dealer then you pay the same hourly rate regardless of what the technician is doing, even if it is a monkeys job ! i always use sterling tyres in bracknell, very experienced with beemers and all types of ABS.

i dont think you were 'stiffed' i think you paid the going rate at a main dealer.

Many many thanks all of you for your help and advice. I will check on here before I buy anything else. ( headlamp guards are next, but not the plastic ones according to the threads)

North OX. Garage are okay. I think the dealer did the best he could when I challenged the price, and I would go there again.

but not for tyres........

merry xmas !!!!!!!!!:GS

Tyres

It seems like you've been taken to the cleaners mate, Ive just been quoted 157.40 all in from Bikerz Ltd, Hanley, Stoke-on-trent, Email :- bikerztyres.co.uk. This seemes like a good price but can anyone find them any cheaper?

Tyres

Thanks Les, I've heard of F & B motorcycle tyres, does'nt he live in the corner house & workes out of his garage after he finishes his day job? A friend of mine uses him for his GSXR 1000, he said he was good. I'll give Steve a ring tommorow to see what he can do for me. Daz. :beerjug:

Wait a sec...
Are we saying that independent tyre fitters can be reasonably relied on to NOT bugger up the ABS (or anything else). If not, then maybe you're paying for not having to worry about this, or to not take the risk.

My bike was the first EVO II bike that Steve at F&B had seen, so the day before I was due in he took a trip out to his local BMW dealer to get all the right torque settings (different on 2003 from 2002 bike) and any other info. He explained to me as he was fitting the the tyres that the EVO II ABS system is really sensitive and that you must not prise the pads apart as you take them off the disks otherwise the backpressure of fluid into the ABS computer would cause it to register a fault. Not bad for a bloke who charges £146/set and clearly rubbishing what North Oxford told you a bout not knowing what he was doing.

This makes it sound like it IS a difficult job, which I wouldn't want dodgy kwikfitbackstreettyreco to be doing.
Is Universal in Tottenham OK? Should I take the risk? Are they consistently reliable? What if Steve/Fred/Joe is off that day? What comeback would I have if they did bugger it up, assuming I didn't die because of it ?
This may sound naive, but I'm not a techie and I can't afford a garage plus tools living in London.
