Tyres on the 2018 1200gs

For road only Continental RoadAttack3 are definitely the sportiest...:thumb2
Very close second but longer lasting is the Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2.
Best street tires for the GS.
If you ride a little off tarmac I would put the Conti TKC 70 on or try the new Karoo Streets from Metzeler as soon as the come available.
The Metzeler Roadtec01 is also a very good street tire but really maybe 5% better than the PST2 but does not last as long as the Pirelli.
I would go CRA3 if you want to do a trackday but otherwise PST2...I.M.H.O.

Isn't there a specific reason why BMW put A3's on the bikes or is it just down to cost. I would like to think that it was the best tyre at the time of development for the bikes.

No idea what metrics BMW use to decide, but I went from the North Devon coast to the South Devon coast last evening in pouring rain, down miles of bloomin' awful, potholed single track roads covered in mud, gravel and farmer's sh*t (route courtesy of Nav V - thanks for that!) before I could get back to B and A roads I knew and the Anakees were outstanding. The bike was completely blathered by the time I got home. Noisy they definitely are, crap they definitely aren't. I probably won't have another set, but because of the noise, not because of poor performance, and I wouldn't contemplate getting rid early.

BMW are always changing the tyres, my bike delivered last Weds came with Tourance next but that doesn’t mean all 2018 bikes will be fitted with these - it’s pot luck which ones you will get, probably changes batch by batch??????

Anakee 3's on my 2 week old bike, but the weird thing is they are not noisy....How come??

They were noisy on my previous GS's which was one of the reasons that I went to PR4's

I have 450 miles on these tyres, maybe they get noisier with more miles, I can't remember?

The majority of bikes since launch have been fitted with A3’s, I have had them on my 13/15 & 17 bikes and fitted several others in between

My January 2018 GS Rallye TE came with Tourance Next...... Not Anakee's... Thank god!!!!!

I've just ordered a set of Tourances (not Next) for my 2015 GSA, had them for years on my old 1150 GSA and love them. Loads of grip in all conditions, fine for a bit of playing in the loose stuff and at £179 for a pair from Oponeo a bargain...

Not a fan of the Anakee 3. Good(ish) when new but they square off quick and have a tendency to slide on the back on bad surfaces and damp without too much provoking.
Michelin pilot road and Dunlop roadsmart 3 give superior grip in all conditions on tarmac.

Last month I swopped my GS twin cam (2011 triple black) and S1000XR (2015 SE) for a new 2018 GS.

GS Triple Black tyres:
supplied new with Tourance, didn't suit sporty road riding, lasted 6250 miles;
Roadsmart 2 on the road much better in every respect, replaced after 5000 as needed dual purpose tyre;
Trailmax, fitted for trip to Morocco, great off but not good on road, 7000 miles;
T Next good compromise, lasted 6000 miles; and
Roadsmart 3, brilliant road tyre, still on bike when sold (done 3000 miles).

S1000XR tyres:
supplied with Pirelli Diablo, superb but lasted less than 2500;
Pirelli P4 not suited to the bike, lasted 5000;
Roadtec01 excellent all round still on bike when sold (done 2000 miles).

2018 GS
Supplied with Anakee IIIs. 'Oh no' I said to the salesman having read some negative views here on them. 'You haven't tried them yet' he replied. And he was right. I am very pleased with the IIIs. They work extremely well in all conditions and seem admirably suited to the GS (which no doubt BMW considered when fitting them). Better than the T Next? For me, yes, as more sporty and agile than I remember T Next to have been.

It must be said though, that most modern tyres are so accomplished that for much of the time there is little to chose between them. The choice, it seems to me, comes mainly in regard to what off-road ability is required. The IIIs seem fine 'on light trails ... over most surfaces' other than mud (MCN Tyre Guide 2016), the T Next look a bit less able on the road but a little better off-road. For me and most other GS riders the bike will rarely if ever go off-road so we delve into detail, price and appearance to decide which sport touring tyre suits best.

We all seem to have our favourite brands and engage in detailed analysis and comment, much like wine 'experts', and we lap up test reports on stopping distance and relative lap times and so on. So, despite the plaudits handed out to the P4 and 01, I think I'll replace the IIIs with Roadsmarts, providing nothing better has come along of course.

Great report, and with experience...........

As for the Anakee 3; I had them taken off at the first service.Hated them.Loud,very slow steering and not fun to ride.
PST2 totally transformed the bike and they seem to last longer than even on my weaker 2012 GS;6000-8000 miles !
Now on Conti RA3 maybe even a hair better but probably a little more wear;you play you pay...:D

The 2014 gsa te had Anakee 3's fitted from new and they were shocking, gave a harsh ride ,were noisy, puncture magnets , poor grip and some incidents in the wet plus they did not last well.

New GSA came with them last September and suprise suprise they are quieter, grippier and half decent in the wet .............. a different compound perhaps ? apparently not according to Michelin , more likely the non ESA bike has much more compliant suspension and is giving the tyres less of a hard time

Maybe thats why mine feel good Neil, my bike may 2017 build, and I have only used the automatic mode suspension, as was running the bike in.

@Smogbob;Don't worry as here are roads or even more so in Mexico that are as good or better than even in the French alps !
Espinazo del diablo in mexico was the best road period when Jeremy Clarkson was still running the show at TopGear...:thumby:
Even better on PST2...;)
