Tyres - Tourance vs Trail attack vs anything else

I've had a read through a few old tyre threads and I'm wandering what tyres to get next on my 1150.

I've always had Tourances and they've been pretty good.

I don't want the Tourance EXPs because of the reduced mileage.

I've read good things about the Conti Trail Attacks - what's mileage like compared with the Tourances? They're about the same price.

Are there any other tyres I should consider? I very rarely go off-road.

Being skint I need something that's going to give good mileage.
 
Got Conti road attacks on my 1150- they are brilliant. Plenty of grip in the dry and the wet, plus they are reasonably priced. I didnt think I would get as much mileage as the Tourances, but have just done a european tour and a bit of mileage back home- roughly 3500 miles. The tyre is nearly knackered- it has squared off badly and after riding it yesterday you could see the rubber balling up down the middle.

As much as I like them I may have to go back to tourances or can anyone suggest anything that will have decent grip but also decent mileage??
 
Trail attacks should give more mileage than 3500, closer to tourance mileage from my experience. If you don't really go off-road then the trail attacks are great. Exp's are poo. I've got some on at the mo and will be changing bact to trail atacks as soon as theyr'e goosed (which won't be very long, reckon I'll of got about 3K out of the rear:().
 
I've got trail attacks on at the moment.Better grip compared to Tourances especially in the wet.I'll get exact mileage and thread depth tomorrow.Like em so much I've got a brand new rear in the attic waiting to go on.Slightly cheaper than Tourances from mynetmoto in Germany.

If you're looking for a good high mileage tyre,can't go wrong with Tourances.Got just about 17K km's from a rear,riding hard and occasional fire trails :thumb and the front looked like it'll last forever.Changed only because sidewalls had tiny cracks after 2.5years of constant use.

I'm on my third set of Trail Attacks and I much prefer them to the Tourances. The first set I got around 12k and the second just over 10k. I was getting about the same mileages from the two sets of Tourances that I've had.

IMO the bike handles better with the Trail Attacks, it tips in to corners really quickly and feels solid on the road whatever the weather. :thumb

Ok..Conti Trail Attacks

Front done 6000KM's with 6mm thread left
Rear done 4000KM's with 7mm thread left
New rear has 10mm thread.

Hope this helps.Have yet to try Pirelli Scorpions on the GS,but they were brilliant on my 950Adv.
 
Trail attacks suit the bike very well and I personally love them.
Very grippy , they grip until you ride off the edge of the tyre or scrape something. Wet or Dry
Very Fast warm Up, wet or dry
Good rate of wear, I get anywhere from 6k to 8K from a set, and they both need replacing at the same time. I'm on my third set now.

Tourances utter shite ( though I know most people on here will swear they're the holy grail of GS tyres ) crap grip, worse in the wet, shit wear pattern, feel like riding on cart wheels, had them on for less than 250 miles before they got taken off and bined, IMHO utter utter shite. But if you like riding on lego blocks then they're the tyre for you

My riding style is best described as "making good progress" and most miles are done on the roads up here on the west coast of scotland

Tyres are probably the most subjective part of a bike though and opinions will vary from each person as to what works well. Try them and see what you think I doubt very much if you'd be disappointed !
 
My 1150GSA came with Michelin Anakee's on from the previous owner. They seem ok so far & havent really changed tread depth/shape in the 1,500 miles I've put on the bike since last week. A lot of that is motorway use as I use it for work everyday & sometimes it's just the quickest way to get there.:augie
TBH though I have nothing to judge them against as it's my first GS, but road grip seems good & they cope with the small amount of dryish mud lanes & the stubble field I've just been in ok. Really good for a road tyre in the ballast at the works carpark though.

Had the previous Z6 on my BoxerCup, and whilst they were better than 020's the front was incredibly noisy to the extent that I was convinced that I had a wheel bearing on the way out the first time I went out on them. Cut the run short came back home and stripped the front end to find everything perfectly okay. Noise did subside with wear but was always present. Also did not find them to be very good on the longevity front, and nowhere near as good as the Road attacks, be interested to hear how the newer version ( it is the newer version I presume ) is....

I read those reviews and can't say i'm overly impressed. I have 020s on my 1100 and love em. they have now been withdrawn i hear... so... will cross that bridge when I come to it. the ones I have are almost brand new. I will probably NOT go back to tourances which imho are almost pedestrian compared to these. and far FAR too noisy. Might try Road Pilots next time...

Pint7x have you tried having a ring round to source a set of original Tourances?
 
Put some Trail Attacks on just before doing a 2000 mile continental trip (nice pun eh) this summer.
Really like them - comfortable, slightly faster to fall into corners than the old tourances and grippy - plus they seemed rock solid in the wet.

Have had my Trail attacks for 5000 miles now and they are great. wearing very well and even, no squaring at all. Nice tread depth left and i,ve never had a scare on normal dry or wet roads. ( had a gravel scare but the front just gripped again once over the shite, had a diesel scare too in the wet when the rear let go a bit, but again gripped real quick once over the spot.)Not a speed merchant in the wet anyway but never had them lock up easily and once had the shit scared out of me when big Jaythro passed a sheep on the road at about 80 and it then run out in front of me.:eek: Scarred the bejeezus out of me but the tyres held ok under VERY heavy braking, and they do corner well. Had thought of getting tourance for the next time to compare them to the conti's as my 2 mates swear by them and they ride far harder than me. so i will make my mind up once im ready to change but for now its the conti's for me. And would be very happy to buy them again :thumb
 
had michilin anarkee 4000 miles on at this rate should get 10000 out of the rear, very good in the wet no noise or instability or weaving,i think the anarkee 2 are dual compound be worth trying on the rear next time.

Phil...if you want tyres that are cheap and will wear, mainly for road, try the Heidenau K60's.

Quite butch looking (sort of half way between TKC's and Tourances in looks) but much squarer profile- wear well on road but also very good in all conditions/bad roads and loose stuff. (we allow them on the level 1 off road trips)

Also dead cheap.

A quick search will turn up several threads on them here :)
 
Trail attacks vs EXP's

The greatest experience I have so far is on the Trail Attacks, currently 6000, miles on a 12GSA for the last 6 months, commuting and touring, riding fairly hard, all weathers, about half worn. They are fantastic dry road tyres, I have full confidence here, but I have much reduced confidence in them in the wet they tend to slip too easily on overbanding and white makings and slip nervously on patchy roads when cranked over.

I had a service recently and the loan bike was a 12 GS standard with Tourance EXP's, the day was awful and extremely wet to start with, but the tyres had so much more grip than the Conti's in the wet, I am considering swapping the Trail Attacks to EXP's for the winter months, then swap back again next spring, I think this may be the best combination for me.

This also tallies with the reports in the PDF below.
