Hi, having just bought a 2004 1150GS I'm looking for breakdown cover, mainly for the UK but I'll be going to Europe on it so will need to look for cover there as well.
Any recommendations for where to get cover that hopefully doesn't require the selling of body parts first ;-)

Ta for reading!

I’d get your insurance that includes motorbike cover such as bemoto

They have quoted me 4 x the price I pay for my XTZ1200, I'll give them a miss thanks ;-)

That’s a surprise. They’ve been competitive for me in the past. My point being to get a service that includes breakdown cover. With insurance is one and also your type of bank account such as nationwide offer an account for £13/month that includes travel insurance, tech cover and European AA breakdown

Does your bike insurer offer breakdown cover as an add on?

Nationwide bank account https://www.nationwide.co.uk/current-accounts/flexplus/ £13 a month includes breakdown, phone and travel insurance. Often the most cost effective way for older vehicles and families with multiple vehicles. The additional premiums for medical stuff on the travel insurance are not cheap.

THIS!!

Covers pretty much anything everywhere in Europe at a fraction of the cost when compared to stand alone breakdown cover

(just to add I have claimed 4 times now on the mobile insurance part and never had an issue and a new/repaired phone was back to be in less than a week)

Just had a quick look at nationwide, looks interesting, ta muchly!

You can get single-trip bike breakdown cover with the AA for Europe (https://www.theaa.com/european-breakdown-cover). They were the only people I could find last year offering such cover for older bikes but but not cheap. 10% discount if you have UK membership which I do through my bank. I wish LLoyds offered what Nationwide offer!

I used to insure through Carole Nash and they included European breakdown cover but they got way too expensive. I'm lucky to get one trip over the channel each year at the moment so the AA single-trip cover is more economical than paying through the nose for insurance cover that includes European breakdown.

My classic policy with Peter James includes UK and euro breakdown cover iirc? I'll double check and post again later.

As above. I'm covered for EU. It doesn't cover repatriation but to a repairer so that would be an issue in a serious incident. Then again that might be the least of your concerns in such circs?

Give them a call if your insurance expires before you intend to leave the UK on your hols.

i think i have taken out specific bike insurance once , for 4 weeks away . i service the bike beforehand to within an inch of it's life , so i leave with a bike with zero faults , new tyres and brakes , thereby reducing the possibility of a breakdown , anything that isn't tip-top is fixed , i do this at least 2-3 weeks before , ride it for a couple of days and re-check everything.
i've broken down twice , once with a puncture , fixed in a shop in Pavia , that a friend uses ,( bike had new tyre and tubes ) , and the other time near Florence , and a friend in Rimini came and rescued me , big bearing in FD . broke down Sat am , riding at 4 pm Monday .
which ever bike i take , i ask myself ...

am i prepared to leave it in a ditch and fly home ...

RAC a whilst not cheap offer full EU cover regardless of age…. Well they did last year.

Watch the small print on RAC. I did not renew with them because European cover was for one call out only, per trip, per 90 day period.

My cover was the personal cover, might be different for single vehicle cover.

I have a friend with a year 2000 ST1100 Pan European, and I know he's struggling to find cover for an upcoming EU trip, so I'll be watching this thread....

We're doing a 6 week European tour on a 2018 RT and have Nationwide FlexPlus travel ins, but I also take out Gold cover with Eurobreakdown -
https://www.eurobreakdown.com. because I would prefer an ins to cover the full cost of any major mechanical breakdown.

I have Britannia Rescue = LV and am pretty sure that they cover older bikes, plus, they'll bring your bike back after an accident, if your insurance doesn't cover it. All assuming that the cost is less than the value of the bike.

I've been following this thread as I'm in a similar position - a 2001 GS that I plan to take overseas.

It's insurance renewal time for me.

I can get a basic (no added extras) policy for ~ £170, or a policy with Bikesure that includes breakdown cover AND overseas riding for ~ £290.

I've just checked the associated 'Flux Rescue' (aka Bikesure) policy and can't see any restrictions about vehicle age.

So about £120 for breakdown cover - how does that compare?

That depends upon how long you're going away for, and how many times during the life of the policy. For one week a year, from what I remember the AA would be cheaper and they did cover my 2000 (i.e. 23 year old) VFR800 last year. If you're away for 2 weeks or going away more than once in the year you're probably better going for an insurance policy that includes the breakdown cover. Best advice is to get online quotes for the breakdown cover and then make a decision.

I found most of the policies to be limited by age when trying for my 80gs. I finally went with a classic insurance ie 20yrs min but some companies offer classic from 17 yrs. uk and euro basic cover on mine but I’m ok with that.
Autoaid offer breakdown which can be extended for an older bike for about £10 and extended to euro cover with their sister company.
