Uk to Furka - Routes wanted from Ypres

I was going to try to be helpful now I am home from France, but the OP appears to have left the room the same day he posted this thread

Clearly put off by the comments he received…..🤣🤣🤣
It was a bit of a direct “demand” for info in his title
Shame, if he’s buggered off as since then, the info provided for him was quite extensive

…. And the lesson today is…..

I’m planning on heading to the Ardennes, then follow the River Meuse to Epinal… then across to Vosges…then turn right to the Jura….

That’s errr my planning so far
Googlemaps is your friend for planning, streetview is brilliant to get an idea of the roads…
Been in that area many times. Some great roads, but also easy to be on fairly boring ones without some planning!

All the OP needs now is the bike friendly cafes, hotels etc. and his planning will be complete :D

He may though needs to clarify what ‘etc’ embraces. Car parks? Views? Shopping centres? Hospitals? Cake shops?

:beerjug:

PS Here’s some tips:

I can do the lot, IIRC the going rate for these "Self Guided Tours" is about £750, when the money clears in my bank account I will send the GPX files with all the Restuarants, Hotels, Cafes and viewpoints marked for him.

seems another soft shelled human , can't take a bit of banter .
i always find the route planning as enjoyable as the actual trip..
i don't understand why people need so much help .... maybe they still live at home with their mummies ?

I wouldn't go that far, but it is certainly better value for money, I often play several trips over winter, but can only ever afford to do one of them.

indeed, I like to plan a fairly fixed route between my chosen bases, usually staying for 2 or 3 nights. I then give myself options for daytrips. I might create a 200 mile loop but I like to incorporate a circuit breaker or two to shorten the loop, just in case I get distracted by some sightseeing or I encounter a cycle race, a road closure, some bad (inc too hot) weather, nasty roads or my ageing corpulence aches.

That is a very good observation.

The distance Ypres to the Furka is about 650 miles and about the same back to Calais. In other words, a 1,300 mile round trip. We can assume that the OP might like a different route back, all whilst avoiding motorways, along with hotels and other biker friendly stuff.

The challenge (and why bods like Simon Wier charge for the service, as do touring companies like MCi) is that planning such a long route for someone totally unknown - if it is to be done properly and neatly - is not necessarily straightforward and can take time. The challenge is then compounded when those requesting the creation of their holiday give little (and sometimes no) information to help the process along. Sometimes, it’s akin to drawing blood out of a stone, trying to find out something as basic as how long a period of time is available door-to-door and, not unusually, where it is they plan on arriving on the Continent and where they’d like to return from.

Nobody minds giving advice; the forum is very often good at it. But an often lazy, all but demanded request * for what is their holiday all for free (some don’t even chip up the forum’s modest site fee) is often taking the piss. This is compounded when little or no thanks comes back, not even a brief note to say how well (or badly) it all went.

There are umpteen free to use route creation tools, many of which will create A to B or A to B to C non-motorway routes in seconds. Google maps is well known, whilst something like Kurviger will give ostensibly ‘motorcycle friendly’ route suggestions. Use them and compare what each free use tool offers up. You no longer need a paper map, with all the confusion that might bring. In short, the tools do it all for you. Then simply fine tune it to suit your individual circumstances. Want things to see and do? Easy, just Google “10 best things to see and do in xxx”. Want a hotel, ask Google to ping some up on its map. Want to know what it looks like? Use street view. Want to know the intimate details of any parking? Contact the hotel and ask. Don’t speak foreign? Google will translate it for you. In other words, use a bit of imagination…. It’s why you ride a motorcycle.

* The classic is the “Me and me six mates we want…. Leaving Thursday… “

fuck 'em , they should've planned better.

There was once a classic, along the lines of:

“Me and my mates are off to the Alps. I am doing the route planning. Can anyone give me non-motorway routes, there and back, hotels and stuff”

That was just about the extent of the request, unaccompanied by a simple ‘Please’ or ‘Thank you’.

Clearly, his ‘planning’ consisted of asking UKGSer. Lord knows what his mates were tasked with and who they asked. :D

Well…. This could fuck things up….

Winter closure.

often a month later and with high walls of snow either side of you, especially the north or eastern slopes. I went up Susten in June the day after it opened and had zero views going up from Andermatt side, and the hairpins were horrible as you could not see the exits due to high walls of snow that had been cut through with a blower. Western side was much better.

I’ll go through the tunnel instead….if required… I promised myself lunch in Italy….
