UK to Turkey and backstarting late June over 6 weeks

Hi, this is in the very early stages of planning but basically I'm going from UK, fairly straight route to Turkey, ride a lot of both the North & South costs, visit Cyprus for a few days ( I have friends there) and then home.

All by the most scenic route possible, no off roading unless it's by accident!!

Staying in cheapish hotels, perhaps some youth hostels.

Apart from that I'm flexible, anyone else planning anything similar, if so perhaps we can arrange to hook up (In the English sense!!)?

EDIT: This will be a 6 week (Ish) trip, not six weeks in Turkey!

It is still subject to change, I've done all of Europe plenty of times, I'm really looking to do more of Turkey and visit friends in Cyprus. Apart from that I'm open to offers:augie

I've not researched island hopping between Turkey & Greece yet, I'm sure there are plenty of ferries I just don't know if they are all vehicle as well as passenger.

This route does take me through Romania, It seems rude not to do the Transfargarasan highway!!

Did something similar in April this year. Similar route but we stopped in Budapest and went through Serbia too. It looks like you are aiming for the Transfagaras highway too (it may not be open, they don't seem to clear snow from it so if it all melts you can use it, if not then you will have to turn around). Scenary is great but the road was awful quality!

Getting into Turkey took three hours (longer than all the other borders put together and we did 17 countries!).
You will have to have:
  • Passport
  • ORIGINAL V5 (or v good colour photocopy)
  • Green card (they will insist it has to be green and made of card although I got by with a letter from the Insurance company which stated Turkey as a destination)
  • Some CASH to pay for a visa
If one of you gets through then they should go and hide around the corner to wait for the others. My mate got through and then waited in plain site, he got called back for some more bureaucracy!
Border control was a royal pain in the harris! On the way out I had to go to 9 seperate offices and have my bike x-rayed!

If you fancy some gentle off road the road from Libonik to Gramsh in Albania is interesting as in not finished but will be by September as the road workers told us!
Watch out for Romania, Albania and Bulgaria where the roads suddenly turn to crap and lorries and cars will swerve to avoid big holes regardless of other traffic. However these were such great countries.

Oh, and it rained... every day...hard!
 
I entered Turkey from Georgia last year, the English passport confused them a little....having the place you buy the visa from located after the booth that wants to see it confused me a little....
 
I went to Turkey in 2012 via France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania & Bulgaria. Most of trip was via motorway as I was meeting my wife for a holiday. Had no problems at Turkish border, took about an hour including buying insurance for TL12 (6 months 3rd party cover) and the usual tourist visa. All very painless!

Hated Romania on the way out in the rain, loved it on the way back in the sun! Amazing how you get a totally different impression depend how you're feeling.

Pretty dodgy driving standards in both Romania & Bulgaria so watch out especially people overtaking on blind bends.

Also when going from Romania to Bulgaria, watch out if they try to sell you "compulsory" medical insurance. Tired, confused & naive, I got done without thinking of getting out my travel insurance!

If you're heading onto one of the few motorways you will need a toll card, get it before you get near a motorway!

Doing similar next April for the Gallipoli commemorations so will subscribe to this thread! I do know you have to get your Turkiah visa online now.

Now what about insurance? Can one purchase insurance at the border if one has no Green Card? My insurance co will not cover me in Turkey.
 
I was in Turkey last year (September), I bought both the tourist visa and insurance at the border. About £30 for both if I remember correctly.
 
Just an update on Turkish visa an e visa has been introduced which will eventually replace buying the visa at the border had no problems this trip but make sure you get the genuine site as there are some rip offs out there.

Together with a couple of other trips...

As for the screen extender, I dropped the bike on a roundabout in Montenego, no real idea how it happened, slow speed, good weather etc. I'm thinking diesel....

So the bike does a 360, screen itself not damaged but the bottom mounting lugs have snapped off. Screen extender shattered....
Some scuff marks on the LH cylinder head protector & LH pannier...all part of the adventure!!!

I spotted this thread when you 1st posted it and was tempted, how ever 2 things stopped me

It was a bit short notice from when you posted to setting off.....I need a bit more notice so I can get the time off work etc
and 2nd
was the duration of the trip. there was no way I could get 6 weeks off this year.

so for future reference if you fancy a shorter trip say 2 maybe 3 weeks max to say Corsica and Sardinia and hop over to Italy and then head home next year :thumb2
