I had fresh ear moulds taken at the London motorcycle show in February and ordered up a new pair of Ultimate Ear’s Bluetooth in-ear monitors. They arrived a couple of days ago.

The Ultimate Ear monitors now use Sony’s very good wi xb400 Bluetooth connection and speakers, as used on their earbuds. The moulds are spot on and very comfortable. The added advantage is that the Sony Bluetooth allows simultaneous connection to two separate devices. This is handy for me, as I have a sacrificial phone, running MyRoute’s app and a Garmin XT running the same route, both running simultaneously. I simply change the voice on one device from male to female, so I can tell which device is ‘talking’ to me.

I have also tried the monitors to listen to music, films, the radio and podcasts, all being played on my iPad. Again, the sound quality is very good.

I was hoping (against expectations really) that there wouldn’t be wires from the earbuds.

My last two pairs of (wired) U/Ears failed as the wires broke where they enter the bud.

Otherwise excellent bits of kit

I have read about the wires breaking. Over many years of ownership I’ve never had the problem, touch wood.

What are the wires for? Is it just a place for the Bluetooth gubbins?

I have a set of Ultimate Ear Bluetooth ear buds. I have paired them with my Garmin Zumo satnav but I’m not getting any sound from the earbuds, hopefully, someone on here will be able to help please?

These would be perfect if i could link it to my intercom and not use the helmet speakers.

I think they only connect to phones and gpsrs if they are similar to the Sony version in the link posted earlier in the thread

It's a sena SRL 2 setup. But I do have a carpuride system on the bike. If I didn't need the intercom I would bin it off but Mrs rides as well and handy to chat on longer rides.

How does the signal go from your intercom to your helmet speakers at the moment?

For me, I currently have a really old Interphone F4 so that connects my Garmin zumo to the speakers in my helmet by Bluetooth. And therein lies my problem! On my way to the ferry I realised that I didn’t have the Interphone unit on my helmet, (I left home in a hurry), and so I thought “no problem, I have my Ultimate ear ear buds and they have Bluetooth. Except when I tried to use them, I couldn’t get a peep out of them in spite of them reporting that they are successfully paired to my Garmin zumo.

So why do they not work and how do I persuade them that it really would be a good idea to give me directions!

My Ultimate Ear - Bluetooth SoundEar Pro works perfectly. It is a two-channel system. One channel of the Bluetooth I have connected to my XT, the other to my phone, from which it receives navigation commands. I have changed the voice commands from my phone to male, simply so I can tell which device is talking to me. The Sony two channel Bluetooth receiver operates on a hierarchical basis. In other words, in my set-up, the voice instructions from my XT, trump those from the phone.

I have no idea why your Bluetooth ear buds do not work. There could be several reasons.

A. Do you have the single channel version or the single channel?

B. Is your Zumo actually connected to the Bluetooth receiver? You say, yes, so we can discount this possibility.

C. Is the volume on the Zumo and / or the Bluetooth receiver set to an appropriate level?

D. Is your Zumo and / or the Bluetooth receiver of your ear buds also connected to anything else, meaning that the hierarchical connection chain is not correct?

Have you spoken to Ultimate Ear about the problem?

Have you tried connecting the ear buds to anything else, to see if they work?

Over to you…..

Well thanks for all the suggestions Wapping, I have managed to sort it out earlier today. This was the first time I really needed to connect my Zumo to the Ultimate ear buds, (I usually use my ancient Interphone F4.

Anyhoo….. I was leaving Burgos this morning and I was resigned to not being able to use it even though it claimed to be paired. As I was putting my helmet on, there was an audible tone from the UE buds but when I tried to use it, there was nothing. It turns out that unless I actually use the Zumo immediately, there is only a short time after pairing that the Zumo and UE buds have to maintain the pairing connection.

Suffice to say that I have used it all day and it works! The clarity and volume are perfect! Thank goodness!
