Ultrasonic Cleaners

You can buy small mesh baskets for watch parts cleaning on eBay, AliExpress etc which might be idea for smaller items like jets, screws, needles etc ?

You can also put small parts in a sealable plastic bag with specific solvents/cleaners in, and drop that in the tank. As long as the parts are fully submerged the ultrasonic will do its good stuff.

I use small sealable plastic tubs for very small components, and larger ones like takeaway food comes in, or old 2l ice cream tubs for larger bits so I don't get all 10L of cleaning fluid dirty every time.

I try and save really dirty greasy stuff for when the fluid is already getting a bit grottty, after cleaning the carbs this time I chucked my kickstar assembly and engine mount rails, nuts and bolts in - saved a lot of elbow grease and cleaning aerosols.

The more I read, the more I realise just how much stuff I’ve got that would benefit from a good ultrasonic cleaning. Currently use a selection of small wire and nylon brushes and sometimes give convoluted castings (Bing carb bodies etc) a thorough scrub in a diesel or paraffin bath. I find compressed air quite effectve and use my gas welder nozzle cleaners to clear small passageways (very gently). Also nylon brushes on a Dremel work quite well.

I’m away at the moment (currently at Ypres and heading back to Amiens tomorrow) but when I’m home I will be ordering a 10l cleaner and we’ll see how it goes.

I bought my ultra-sonic cleaner about 5 years ago from Aldi .. still working perfectly and believe me, it’s a hard life :D
