Why do I get hundreds of email messages each week telling me that an email message has been returned to me even though I never sent them? When I look at the messages it appears as though I sent it from something like evax@"mydomain".co.uk or emsemj@"mydomain".co.uk but I don't send them. :nenau

I couldn't give a toss though, as almost all of them don't get past the spam filter and so they end up getting binned. But I just can't help but wonder who the hell is bothering to clog up the internet with this junk and making it appear as though I'm sending them. :nenau

Some spam outfit has nicked an address list from someone else's computer and is using it as the source address for their spam in an attempt to get round spam filter blacklist.

I assume that you have anti-virus software on your computer and do regular scans?

Yup, use AVG free and Spyware Detector. Do regular scans and once a week use CrapCleaner to clean up registry, cookies etc.

Does this mean eventually I will be blacklisted on a lot of email servers? Sounds like someone nicked my domain and is using it to send spam, but how then do microsoft.com, cisco.com ibm.com etc. etc. prevent spammers from using their domain for sending spam mail?

Here's a copy of one of the fake emails-

If you looked at the mailheaders the mails aren't sent from your domain at all, the spurious @yourdmains are listed as the reply-to address so when they are returned to sender your mailserver bounces them to your catch-all account.

To avoid this turn-off your catch-all account and it will help, don't believe the big users of TLD's don't suffer this - they all do but they employ enterprise level services to manage them.

I hope you also have a firewall to prevent stuff being nicked and sent from your 'puter ?

A hardware firewall, such as most routers have, will cope with most incoming attacks, but if you're unlucky enough to get hit with a backdoor virus, it won't prevent stuff getting back out, and this is normally how people's email address books are hijacked for spam attacks.

You could try the free Zonealarm which is quite effective.

It may also help to assure yourself that you are in fact free of malware and a handy free prog to do that is HiJackThis :)

I use a hardware firewall (Linksys) and I have Zonealarm on my PC as I don't fully trust the Windoze XP one.

Looked at wife's gmail account yesterday, she had 1132 "Returned mail: Message Undeliverable" which included the usual spam junk.
