Unleaded or Super Unleaded?

Lambda

Excellent stuff, Kenny. Spot on. Only one small observation:
Lambda is Greek for 3, actually. Alpha, Beta, Lambda, etc.
And the device was named after the tip which is made of a special (and secret) formula. I image that was named No. 3 because the 2 first attemt did not work.

Again, impresive piece...

So Kenny, was I really talking shite;

Go too far from the control envelope designed by the manufacturer and may the 'Gods of hot metals' be with you!

Weak mixture at high engine revs equals extremes of temperature in all the wrong places e.g. the piston crown and the exhaust valve, you have been advised.

I know this only too well from my younger days when I had a Honda CB77, twin straight through pipes, open carbs with spacers and bellmouths, sounded magic for 200 miles.
The piston crowns did not just melt, they fractured into metalic dust never to be seen again.

Sorry about Scotttish banter (shite) not meant in any derogatory fashion:rolleyes:

Leaded or Unleaded

So I'm leaving the Lambda sensor well alone, BMW can check its performance for me. The exhaust is staying standard, but the throttle bodies and potentiometers will get some serious scrutiny.
My GS goes fine enough as SHE is on normal unleaded and if I want to go any faster I'll use my Faser 1000.
I,m buying when I meet up with some of you guys next time.
Cheers (hic)

And I always thought that the third letter of the Greek alphabet was Gamma and that Lambda was the eleventh.

Magic materials

There is no secret the stuff is called ZIRCONIUM DIOXIDE (Zr02) and its applied as a ceramic. See Technical forum.

Anyone checked their fuel injectors for potential air leaks around the injector body to throttle housing. Run the engine and sray a small quantity of WD40 or a few drops of engine oil around said area, if the lube disappears suddenly theres an air leak, if it just sits there relax and have a beer. Should you find its leaking air at the injector and the machines out of warranty, either fit new seals 'o rings' or use a small amount of Hylomar sealant (Halfords etc) or dare I suggest silicone sealant.

If you think your engines running leaner than normal carefully check ALL vacuum pipes and filtration hoses, clamps etc. It's not unknown for the pipes from the throttle bodies to the filter base to be incorrectly seated.

Good luck.

Knocking when hot

I have an Adventure which has started knocking when pulling away briskley in 1st but only when hot. This can be provoked in other gears but only if I am a hooligan with low speed/high gear/lots of thottle. Optimax improved this but I think this is masking the problem. Has anyone any suggestions?

Mick,

pinking is generally a sign of using low octane petrol in a high compression engine. Since the petrol you're using is clearly OK, you need to look at the compression. The only way (that I know of) that this can increase of its own accord is due to carbon build up inside the heads / on top of the pistons.

Try going onto the ADV Rider site and doing a search for 'pinging' (which is what the Americans call pinking or pre-detonation). I've not seen this subject discussed on this site, but it's been done in detail over there.....

now that is an understatement :D

could also be timing too far advanced or weak mixture.

Thanks for the quick repies, the bike is going in tomorrow to be checked so I will respond when I have a solution.

This is my third boxer and I have done about 50 000 on them in total so I am curious as none have been this bad, even when the injection was out of balance on my old 1100GS due the original throttle cables.

How can I call a great bike bad!

One idea from reading the coments on this site, if the lambda sensor only funtions when hot and my problem only happens when hot could I disconnect the sensor as a test?

Mick
