Coming back (to Chesham) from Swaledale at the weekend (in the car), I asked my pal Streetpilot 3 to calculate the quickest route home. On the way up, it gave me the trusted route of A1 to Richmond (Scotch Corner) to Reeth..

Knowing that access to the A1 southbound is via Catterick and therefore longer, I was expecting a different route back...

Imagine my surprise, when, just outside Redmire, Streetpilot told me to take a left turn down an 'unpaved road'!! Unfortunately, it was dark, so I couldn't see what it was like, but it was marked only as a footpath, not a bridleway or public road, was gated, and looked in pretty poor condition (not a drop of Tarmac!)

Anyone else had a similar experience??? :)

similar but I didn't get told by the gps it was unpaved, it just says road towards xyz or wherever, did one last week over towards lake vyrnwy - started off narrow road then went to tamac with bits of grass up the middle, ended up as a mud/gravel track going through some forestry commission area

good fun, but i'd have been happier with tkc 80's rather than tourances if you know what I mean!

Yes I got routed down a back road towards Penistone only to find it was unmade (unpassable as well) SPIII did`nt mention its status.

Dave
Where was this unpassable road into Penistone ? I'm currious as I live at Thurgoland and thought I knew all the tracks round and about.

Sherpa;)

This seems to be quite common. I've been route up a tricky byway just south of Llangollen. One that the off road ride on the GS event wouldn't go up!!
I've also been routed down green lanes a couple of times in France. I've always riden those ones because it's always been dry(ish) when it's happened.
It's a good job we ride big trailies. It'd be fun trying to follow these routes on a R1!!

Hi Sherpa

If you travel along Spicer House lane towards Thurlstone you will intersect Royd Moor Rd. It then becomes High Bank Lane and its a dirt track and it drops into Thurlstone. Its only about 1.2 miles long but there are several unmade roads out that way.

if you're in a car i take it these roads are impassable. Does that mean the gps settings can be altered for the minimum class of road ?
or is it a failing ?

Yep,

Mine's does it when coming over the Hill from Tomintoul towards Crathie (Where the royals go to confess their Sins whilst on Holiday in the Highlands).

There's a short stretch, 0.7 mile, between the B976 and the A93 that mine tries to take me down.........

It's unmade and deeply rutted........Couldn't possibly take CCII down there, it would get all dirty......:D

I remember hearing a comedian one hogmanay talking about snow road closures:

"Theres good news about the road to Tomintoul.......they`ve found it!."

Never quite got the joke until I rode the road.
