Unrest in the Balkans - should I worry about going there?

My insurance company won't issue a green card for Europe, do we have to buy cover at the borders of Serbia, Bosnia ect.

You WILL need a green card for countries outside of the EU. Trying to convince your insurance company of this can, in my experiance, be a frustrating experiance.
They may well tell you that 'strictly speaking' you don't need one but try explaining that at a minor Romanian border crossing!

Yes, you can usually buy cover at borders but I'd only view it as a border crossing 'tax' - not sure how useful it'd be should you need to claim against it

I had a chat with a Serbian solicitor that specialises in insurance he says that you can get 3rd party insurance and fully comp and it will provide the same type of cover as over here, however the fully comp will be quite expensive. Another issue is sometimes the insurance people at the border do not speak English so discussing the different insurance can be difficult

Try saying CASCO which means fully comp and "ne" CASCO means no fully comp so they should give you 3rd party (ne means no)

Oh and I had a marvelous lunch at a Serbian Army Canteen 4 people, 4 beers, 4 starters, 4 mains, 4 side dishes and 4 coffees with a good tip 23 Euro, the doggy bag would have fed another person.
