I've searched on here but can't find any previous cases, so has anyone had a throttle body seize (2009 GS SE)?

My right hand one has - not a nice riding experience & I will be considerably poorer by the time I get to ride my GS again.

Still under the adage that "its not an adventure till your bike is collected on a flat-bed" at least it turned my daily commute into central London into an adventure!

Bit embarrasing this, but not sure.

Bike was very jerky on the throttle, then refused to rev above 2.5k rpm for a few miles, then stuck on 4.5k with no throttle movement.

I've been told by BMW Park Lane that the "throttle body has seized" & needs replacing - at great cost!

Go see Steptoe.

He's 45 mins up the A3 from you (in fact, reading it again, you probably pass within 300 yards of his house every day) and it will cost you a tiny fraction of what it sounds like Vines (I assume) are going to bend you over the desk for. :thumb2

'Seized throttle body'......WTF?

Throttle body seized??

Congratulations, yours is the first I've heard of.

Are you sure it isn't the throttle cable or cable splitter jamming up?

If the bushing for the butterfly plate spindle has some accumulated dirt in there I can see how it would stick, but that suggests your air filter isn't doing its job.

Is it worth a squirt of WD down the air inlet into the throttle body and a bit of manipulating to see if you can free it up a bit?

I do indeed pass Steptoe's place most days, and he has been servicing it since it ran out of warranty in 2011

When it first started going wong I planned to contact him, but couldn't face a journey through London permantly stuck at 4500 RPM, so I got Park Lane to collect it

Thanks for all the advice - I don't know why they can't simply clean it up - although I can imagine there might be more profit in some solutions than others?

Anyway I'm going to roll with it, but it does seem unusual

a phone call to James Sherlock or Moto works might be an idea, given that i dont think these things wear out usually a 2nd hand one might be ideal and a lot cheaper than new (assuming you cannot get the seized one fixed) James S are very helpful

Because BMW dealerships don't have mechanics anymore.

The have fitters. (some of whom may or may not also be mechanics, but working there, it's incidental)_

If the computer says it's broken, the computer says 'replace it!'

Even if it's just gummed up or the problem is a sticking cable, if the Computer says that, they have to do it.:eek

Oh well, committed now, please let us know how it turns out because I've never heard of a seized throttle body myself. Oh, if they plan on replacing your original throttle body ask them to keep it for you, it would be interesting to see whats wrong with it :thumb

I have to agree with others, on this. I've never heard of a seized throttle body myself either.

I would be looking at cables first.

Like others, i hate the computer diagnostics, because they will just replace whatever the computer says, when sometimes all thats needed is a bit of WD40 :D.

These days we live in a disposable society :blast whatever happened to fixing stuff.

If I hear a GS filtering past me at 4500 RPM on the A3 into London I will have a good idea who the rider is. :D
