Unusual crash.

Had a really strange crash on the GS today on the way home.

Roads were dry and the sun was out, I was doing 30 along a country road, wanting to turn right, so signalled, pulled over and took it slowly cos its narrow and there was a car turning left (to go the way I'd come).

All of a sudden I was kissing tarmac !

It felt like as I was going around the RH turn I was in too high a gear and she stalled half way round, lost power and then before I had the chance to pull the clutch in, she gripped and high sided me as the back end came round.

Luckily the crash bars stopped any damage at all, which I was really surprised about, but the fact she cut out at all worried me.

After I got back up, i resumed the 25 mile ride home and actually tried to go in too high a gear on really tight corners but she never stalled at all, just chugged.

It may have been all down to rider error but I'll be watching for it happening again !

Been there, done that !

Those right turns caught me when it coughed and died, luckily I saved it on the clutch before tasting gravel.

Don't you just love the BMW fuel injection Russ

Stick in superplus 98 ron fuel and it just doesn't happen, most times I drop some cheapo gas in it does the same thing, not every fuel up but an awful lot.

98 cures it

I really must get around to having that re-map done at the tuning specialist near Mallory P. the 98 doesn't come cheap.

Cheers Marc, not sure many garages up here keep the 98 (never really noticed to be honest!) but I'll have a look next time I'm filling up so thanks for the tip.

Also glad (in a way) I now know what happened cos I hadn't got a clue what I'd done wrong !

Dinna want to do that again !

It's a failing of the BMW that poor fuel can cause an accident on what is a really good bike.
Better mapping would cure it if you stay in this country with our quality fuel. Goodness knows what it's like on the really poor gasolene in Africa.

Hi, guys,
I found all the quirkiness,snatchiness and stalling disappeared when I installed accellerator module + Iridium plugs. Got even better after fitting K&N filter. Feel more secure now, mine stalled easily when pulling away from a corner, and not being gentle with the clutch. Awkward moments, especially if a car comes driving up to you.... Now pulls strong from 1500 rpm, and runs without any vibes too. lovely. worth a try.
