Hi all

Over the next few nights I’m going to post pictures & a little info of a trip Nicky and I did this September

I’m posting this ride report for two reasons one to show you all what a great trip Nicky & I had, two to maybe give ideas for trips so please post up if you want any more info

As with most of the trips lately it started with a drive in the van, this time we left the van in Padova Italy.

Our route took us to Italy, Sicily, Montenegro, Bosnia, Croatia & Slovenia

0300.jpg

Up Mount Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano more info here

0301.jpg

0302.jpg

Paddled down the Tara River Canyon in Montenegro, the longest canyon in Europe and second longest in the world after Grand Canyon, at 78 kilometres in length and 1,300 meters at its deepest, more info here

0303-1.jpg

0304-2.jpg

We also rode down a small canyon between CrnaGora & Nedajino in Montenegro

0305.jpg

0306-1.jpg

The Godfather tour in Sicily more info here

0307.jpg

0308.jpg

We rode lots of great track.

The run up to Zabljak, Zabljak is in the centre of the Durmitor mountain region and with an altitude of 1,456 metres, it is the highest situated town in the Balkans

0309.jpg

Dropped in on some bears in Croatia

Our first day on the bikes was an uneventful but pleasant run form Padova to Genova port where we would catch the ferry to Palermo Sicily.

0001_resize.jpg

I love watching the ferries unload I have a big van but never had it loaded like that!

0002_resize.jpg

Good mix of bike on board.

0003_resize.jpg

We boarded just before dark, the next day was sunny so most of the time was spent on deck

0005_resize.jpg

We spotted Sicily

0006_resize.jpg

0008_resize.jpg

After what can only be described an excitimg ride though Padova we head for Corleone but stopped at the good old spar for supplies.

0009_resize.jpg

As the light was fading we stopped at Piana degli Albanesi, this was the view form our room

0010_resize.jpg

Then it was the run up to Corleone .

0011_resize.jpg

0012_resize.jpg

0013_resize.jpg

0014_resize.jpg

After Corleone we headed for Mount Etna across country on a mix of back/unsealed
roads

0015_resize.jpg

0016_resize.jpg

0017_resize.jpg

0018_resize.jpg

0019_resize.jpg

We spotted Mount Etna.

0020_resize.jpg

0021_resize.jpg

Plenty of lava about!

0022_resize.jpg

0024_resize.jpg

0025_resize.jpg

0027_resize.jpg

0028_resize.jpg

We stayed on Mount Etna at Hotel Coraso, it was great, info here. We went for a stroll before dinner.

0029_resize.jpg

0030_resize.jpg

0032_resize.jpg

0033_resize.jpg

0034_resize.jpg

0035_resize.jpg

0036_resize.jpg

0037_resize.jpg

0038_resize.jpg

0040_resize.jpg

We new the bikes were safe, the local police seemed to be regulars at the hotel!

0041_resize.jpg

Great views at night towards Catania.

0042_resize.jpg

The next morning we took the cable car part way up Etna as the bikes were not allowed.

0043_resize.jpg

0044_resize.jpg

0045_resize.jpg

0046_resize.jpg

It would have been great to ride these tracks

0047_resize.jpg

All was peaceful at the summit.

0048_resize.jpg

There were lots of little craters below

0051_resize.jpg

0052_resize.jpg

Couldn’t resist a ride on the lava

0054_resize.jpg

But the track didn’t go far

0055_resize.jpg

0056_resize.jpg

0057_resize.jpg

Good of you to take the time to post, I know it can be a little underappreciated at times.
Some lovely pictures, and some good riding it seems. :thumb2

Very nice pics keep it coming

enjoyed that and cracking pictures. :thumb
more more !

Then we headed for Forza d’Agro and stopped for a drink in a lovely restaurant Il Padrino which was decorated with pictures from filming from the Godfather films.

0058_resize.jpg

This church featured in the films

0059_resize.jpg

0061_resize.jpg

Great views on the way back down

0063_resize.jpg

0064_resize.jpg

Then we headed for Savoca, where the Bar Vitelli remains virtually unchanged to this day

0065_resize.jpg

0066_resize.jpg

0067_resize.jpg

0068_resize.jpg

0069_resize.jpg

0070_resize.jpg

0071_resize.jpg

This plaque describes the wonderful lady who ran the bar at the time the films were made

0072_resize.jpg

0073_resize.jpg

0074_resize.jpg

This is the road we took from the coast to Savoca.

0075_resize.jpg

0076_resize.jpg

0077_resize.jpg

It was then time to leave Sicily. We took a short ferry from Messina to Villa San Giovanni with some guys from the Czech Republic

0078_resize.jpg

0079_resize.jpg

0080_resize.jpg

0081_resize.jpg

0082_resize.jpg

What a great bike!

0083_resize.jpg

0084_resize.jpg

0085_resize.jpg

As I said “Short crossing”

0086_resize.jpg

Then we went to explore the Dell’Aspromonte National Park

0087_resize.jpg

0088_resize.jpg

0089_resize.jpg

These were the tracks we were heading for.

0090_resize.jpg

Nicky was unsure that I was taking the right route, I have been known to take “short cuts” before! (Later in the report you’ll see more evidence of my short cuts!!

0091_resize.jpg

In my defence, the road definitely ran next to the river on the map, however it turned out to be in the river

0091a.jpg

This picture was taken by the white x on the map

0092_resize.jpg

We then rode some tarmac which wasn’t in much better condition!

0093_resize.jpg

0094_resize.jpg

0095_resize.jpg

At least the safety barriers were substantial!!

0096_resize.jpg

0097_resize.jpg

0098_resize.jpg

0099_resize.jpg

0102_resize.jpg

Our route took us to an unsealed road through the forest

0103_resize.jpg

0104_resize.jpg

0105_resize.jpg

Then it was time to take the ferry from Bari in Italy to Bar in Montenegro

0106_resize.jpg

0107_resize.jpg

Time for Nicky to do a spot more sunbathing

0108_resize.jpg

0109_resize.jpg

If you look closely you can see the harbour pilot leaving the boat

0110_resize.jpg

0111_resize.jpg

0112_resize.jpg

We left Bari around mid-day, the crossing was 9 hours, on arrival there were some stunning yachts

0113_resize.jpg

Next morning we headed north (in Montenegro)

0115_resize.jpg

As always we tried to take the scenic route

0116_resize.jpg

0117_resize.jpg

0118_resize.jpg

0119_resize.jpg

This trail started to look less used, I went ahead and it soon came to an end

0120_resize.jpg

0121_resize.jpg

So it was time to find another route

0122_resize.jpg

This ended at this family’s house, who kindly invited us in for a drink

0125_resize.jpg

Unfortunately neither of us spoke the other’s language but we managed to get information about a great route onwards

0123_resize.jpg

0124_resize.jpg

0126_resize.jpg

Short video of what the roads were like on first part of our run up to Zabljak

<iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/16363830?portrait=0" width="700" height="525" frameborder="0"></iframe><p><a href="http://vimeo.com/16363830">Montenegro Run to Zabljak Part 1</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/user1443772">Louis</a> on <a href="http://vimeo.com">Vimeo</a>.</p>

We were now fairly high up, you could feel it getting cooler. We were heading for Zabljak, the highest town in the Balkans.

0131_resize.jpg

0132_resize.jpg

0133_resize.jpg

0134_resize.jpg

0135_resize.jpg

0136_resize.jpg

0138_resize.jpg

Video of the roads on the next part of the run up to Zabljak

<iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/16364187?portrait=0" width="700" height="525" frameborder="0"></iframe><p><a href="http://vimeo.com/16364187">Montenegro Run to Zabljak Part 2</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/user1443772">Louis</a> on <a href="http://vimeo.com">Vimeo</a>.</p>

Again we found a great place to stay just on the outskirts of Zabljak which is a ski resort, the food here was fantastic, with the nicest bread we’ve ever tasted.

0127_resize.jpg

0128_resize.jpg

The next day we were heading towards Scepan Polje as the next day we planned to go rafting. Our route took us mostly on unsurfaced roads with this spectacular gorge crossing

0139_resize.jpg

0140_resize.jpg

0141_resize.jpg

0141a_resize.jpg

0142_resize.jpg

0143_resize.jpg

0144_resize.jpg

0145_resize.jpg

0146_resize.jpg

0147_resize.jpg

0148_resize.jpg

0149_resize.jpg

What a place to live!

0150_resize.jpg

0153_resize.jpg

0154_resize.jpg

Being a carpenter this is a million miles away from where I do my work.

0155_resize.jpg

0156_resize.jpg

Video of ride the Gorge

<iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/16364412?portrait=0" width="700" height="525" frameborder="0"></iframe><p><a href="http://vimeo.com/16364412">Montenegro Riding the Gorge</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/user1443772">Louis</a> on <a href="http://vimeo.com">Vimeo</a>.</p>

After reaching Scepan Polje, we headed up the main road to Pluzine for fuel

0157_resize.jpg

0158_resize.jpg

0159_resize.jpg

0160_resize.jpg

0161_resize.jpg

0162_resize.jpg

We then followed the road back to our camp for the night, at Scepan Polje which is on the Montenegro/Bosnian border.

0163_resize.jpg

0165_resize.jpg

0166_resize.jpg

The next day we met Carlo from Tara Adventures (more info here) to go rafting

0167_resize.jpg

We then travelled up stream to paddle back towards camp.

0168_resize.jpg

0169_resize.jpg

0171_resize.jpg

0172_resize.jpg

The best time of year to go for white water is in the spring, where it would take you approximately 45 minutes to cover what took us almost 3 hours. There were a fair few times when it got pretty exciting. This was a fantastic way to see the canyon.

See short video copied from Carlo’s site (not us)

0173.jpg

This is Carlo, a smashing bloke with fantastic knowledge of the area.

0174_resize.jpg

0175_resize.jpg

There was a quick detour to an ice cold waterfall.

0176_resize.jpg

0177_resize.jpg

This bridge is the border between Montenegro & Bosnia.

0178_resize.jpg

The day after rafting under the bridge, we rode over it into Bosnia.

0179_resize.jpg

0180_resize.jpg

We then headed for Mostar

0181_resize.jpg

0182_resize.jpg

0183_resize.jpg

0184_resize.jpg

0185_resize.jpg

0186_resize.jpg

Great report Paul:thumb

Having ridden with Louisdut a few times, I can confirm he can sniff out a brilliant route which you may, or may not, be able to get to the end of:augie

Another top notch report mate, I've 'stickied' it (not in that way mind:D)

Louis

We found a great hotel, this was the view from our room of the famous bridge

0192_resize.jpg

One of the reasons the bridge is famous is because of the diving club, if you look closely you can see one of the divers

0193_resize.jpg

0198_resize.jpg

0201_resize.jpg

0202_resize.jpg

0203_resize.jpg

0207_resize.jpg

0208_resize.jpg

0209_resize.jpg

We enjoyed a light supper!

0210_resize.jpg

0211_resize.jpg

0212_resize.jpg

Next morning we explored another riverbed

0214_resize.jpg

0215_resize.jpg

The trail followed the river for a while…

0216_resize.jpg

Then left the river and rose up through the valley

0217_resize.jpg

Then we found ourselves riding in he riverbed, this was the most difficult tack of the trip.

0219_resize.jpg

0220_resize.jpg

Nicky glad to be out of there!
