OK I know I am being a muppet but I'm having a senior moment.:blast
I have a Zumo 550 with Version 8 maps on it. I want to replace with later maps but when I try and install it says not enough space!.

two questions
Can I run maps from an SD Card?
Can i "over write" existing maps with a new set?

If I can, how do I do it??:hug

If you update on-line using the Garmin updater with an SD card in your Zumo it will remove your old mapping and install the new mapping on your SD card.

That's what happened with my Zumo 660 which went from 2013.30 to 2013.40 the other day. Not exactly the same thing but in theory, all being well, it should do the same with yours.

If you haven't bought your map update yet have a look at the NuMaps Lifetime gift-card. Same end result as buying on-line from Garmin, though you will need to wait for delivery, but at least £25 cheaper from Handtec.

Bugger, just noticed that Handtec have run out of stock. Must be the new mapping update rush... They should have some in soon.

erm, just tried to update my maps with the amusingly named "garmin express"
have free map updates and thought I had uploaded after a considerable and slow process.............to 2013.30

now seems as if 2013.40 is what i should have had.....

by the way, I also had the "file too big" message, but not the option to load onto the sd card.....

garmin.....
those app writers are little monkeys aren't they:blast

im trying to upload from a pc. The veesions I have are pre-garmin express!

I have tried to upload mapping to an SD card in my Zumo550 via my Mac and never been able to as there doesn't appear to be an option to put the mapping on the card as opposed to the internal memory on the unit.

Good luck to you if you manage it. :thumb

It loads it on the card now but doesnt see it! I upgraded (or so I thought!) from 2008 to 2009. It still says its 2008 and now cant unlock the maps. Still navigates and searches for everything :( Poxy thing is doing my head in:blast

Updated my 660 with the new Garmin Express but there is no option to select update to PC as well so new maps on 660 but not on Mapsource!!!! Ended up running 'updater' like before and installed it to computer so Mapsource now also up to date, what a faff!!!
Rang Garmin they know about it and are working on it for the next version of Express'.

With Garmin Express you get the option to load the maps on to your PC - in other words update your Mapsource software. You can then select which maps you want to load onto your 550 depending on where you're going, up to the limit of the internal memory (2gb I think). his saves all the fannying around loading on to an SD card which in my experience takes a little longer to load and read the maps when on the move.

He's right you know ;)

With the 550 the end result is the same. You can also do this with the 660 but you'll miss out the Junction View data (marginally useful) and the 3D Building data (eye candy IMHO).

My PC has an SD Card slot, can I load the maps via that? and if yes how the heck do I let My Zumo know they are there? IS there some sort of secret squirrel boot up routine?!!!!

MapInstall can write directly to an SD card in a reader. Pretty sure that it will create the correct folder structure. If not just create a folder on the SD card named Garmin and put the GMAPSUPP.IMG file, and any others created by MapInstall in there.

Once in your Zumo and booted up you'll need to tick the new mapping, and untick the old if you haven't removed it. This can be found burried in the settings menu under maps ISTR.

HTH

I've tried this, the maps on the Zumo are 2008, I'm trying to install 2009. The thing worked well until I uploaded a route for a charidy bike ride. Now when you boot the unit it says "Cant upload maps". Sill question but on my PC I have 2009 upgrade unlocked, I didn't install the original 2008, this couldn't be the issue could it?

Sorry, for "upload" read "unlock" !! Biological interface problem on the computer!:type
