Up in smoke
This morning I set off to work in pouring rain when a mile downs the road a puff of smoke came out from the front of the petrol tank. I though probably water evaporating, but the smell of burning and the charging light on, told me otherwise. I stopped immediately ands tried the check by the road but could not see anything so I turn around back to the shelter of the garage.
Removed the tank, nothing, checked the fuses, nothing. Switched the ignition on and immediately smoke came out of a big loom towards the front. Opened the isolation and there it was. Several wires melted together and smoking. WTF? I wondered, till on close inspection find the actually one of the fuses was burn. Traced the problem to the back light cluster: the connector for the brake light was loose and apparently touching the other connectors. After isolating the short, I tried to solve the problem with the burned loom. Managed to isolate and separate the melted wires, ending with two brown, one grey cables that I had to cut to separate. After reassembling everything back, switched on the engine and surprisingly everything seems to be working fine; Charge light off, all lights, indicator, horn, instruments, etc. Working fine.
So what are those cables I cut?
What else should I check?
Any advice appreciated…
