update on 1100 gearbox clunk

Cheers for this thread you guys; I'll bookmark it and use it when I get round to sorting my 'old' gearbox. Not sure which model it is, it replaced the original one when I managed to crack the housing on that through being a numbty. :blast

It's been 'dying' foir six years now, making strange rumbling noises at low speeds, and discharging a very fetching metal-flake oil at changes. Last year it started making very strange noises when I engaged the clutch, so I decided a change was due. On removing the box I discovered it had 5-7mm lateral (in/out) movement. Sounds similar...

I have access to maching facilities, when I do it I'll try to remember to take photos.

Meanwhile, any tips on replacing the oilseal (the rear one on the clutch rod/input shaft I think). That blew on the 'new' box on a mad trip in November. I think that trip is worth a write up of its own! :D

Cheers,

Dave.

Still waiting for bit's from motorworks, they've sent two different input shafts now,one for an 1150 and the other for an m94 box:spitfire.I'll let you all know the more when i get the bit's.
P.s. Has anyone else had probs with motorworks recently.

I usually find them very good.

They did send me the wrong gearbox selector fork recently, after I thought that I had given them a very clear statement of requirements over the 'phone, but that is an easy mistake to make.

They deal with a huge range of spares every day - and they are human. I wouldn't hold it against them, they'll come good in the end.

I agree ,i used to think they were fantastic ,i have been buying from them for years and never had a single problem ,nearly always next day delivery ,but this shaft seems to be causing them a real problem. The bike has been in bits now for about a month and i am getting p!ssed off ,so is the lad whose bike it is.
I have sent them very clear photos of the shaft and explained a million times over the phone to several different people thats it's an m97 box ,and so far i have had a shaft from an 1150 and one from an earlier 1100 box ,and two wrong seals.
I know they are busy and probably deal with hundreds of orders every day ,but i still can't understand why they can't get the right shaft and seal to me.
Anyway rant over ,they assure me i will have the right bits by midweek. :thumb

The correct second hand shaft finally arrived from motorworks on friday ,so i stripped it to make sure all was ok ,when i removed the circlip and collet retainer one of the collets had broken up ,so i decided to use the best one from the other shaft.
I built it up with the washer i made to replace the wavy washer.
The box is now back in the bike and all seems ok ,it goes through all the gears ok with no horrible noises ,just need to take it for a run now.
Here's the diagram for the spacer to replace the wavy washer. It can be made from ordinary mild steel because it is fixed on the shaft so should not wear.If anyone needs one making i can make one and post it for a small fee:D

Hi kompost!
I am curious about the result of your repair performed on the gearbox. It's been a year since you did it and I think you know by now if it is worth or not the repair.

As far as i know it is still ok, i am not sure how many miles my mate has done now since the repair, but i know he went to scotland last year and did several thousand miles (with wife and luggage), without any problems. I know he hasn't done any big trips for a while, but he hasn't reported any problems so i assume it is still ok. I think the wavy washer replacement works, if you need to strip your box for any reason i would do it at the same time.
Does yours need doing?
Has anyone else done it since, and how many miles have you done since.
