They are, according to the link in the first post.

I wonder if you can now use the BMW App (like the cars) for vehicle data on your phone, petrol levels, tyre pressures etc?

Not to mention the ability to set ventilation times, of course...:D

These few paragraphs shed a bit more light on it, separate Navigator still recommended.

Using the phone and listening to music in comfort while riding. If the rider for example connects a smartphone and a helmet equipped with BMW Motorrad communication system using the TFT display, he can easily access the media playback and phone functions. These phone and media functions can be used without having to install an app. If a Bluetooth connection has been established with any standard smartphone, the rider can enjoy listening to music while riding. Of course the rider can also jump back and forwards in his music collection. The rider can see all his smartphone contacts in the TFT display and can select and call contacts using the multi-controller. If there is an incoming call while on the road, the rider can quickly take or reject the call with a single tip of the controller.

BMW Motorrad Connected App with practice-oriented arrow navigation and numerous additional functions. The free BMW Motorrad Connected App is a world first for motorcycles offering everyday-suitable and practice-oriented arrow navigation directly via the TFT display. Both the navigation itself and the ability to access the app functions directly on the motorcycle represent a real stand-alone feature. The BMW Motorrad Connected App also offers further features such as recording your ridden routes or displaying ride statistics and information.

The arrow navigation in the form of turn-by-turn arrow directions directly in the TFT display and provides very precise turn indications including lane guiding. Last destinations or points of interest can also be called up directly using the TFT display. This basic navigation is especially interesting for motorcyclists who want to handle everyday riding or short trips comfortably without having to take any additional equipment along.

For touring riders with higher demands, the BMW Motorrad Navigator is still recommended since it provides specifically optimised navigation for motorcyclists and features the respective planning and routing functions. The Navigator is also operated using the multi-controller. The operating focus can be simply transferred from the TFT display to the Navigator.

So are they now charging extra for the NAV mount and cradle which is standard on the current models??

It's always been an optional extra. But most just buy a TE which is just BMW's way of saving you from the hardship of having to tick all the optional extras boxes on the form.

So will you be unable to do customized routes like you do now in Basecamp or Mapsource??

I would imagine that's the case with just the TFT, and a smart phone, dedicated Nav is still the way to go (Of course with copies of paper maps)

Having bought a GS in March, and finding the display/instruments the worst part of the package, I was initially rather irrationally annoyed at the news. However even if I had known I wouldn't have wanted to wait another year, and to be honest the interaction with the instruments at present is probably only 5% (at most) of the riding experience. In any case I've largely overcome the most important (to me) deficiency of the current instruments by fitting a large digital GPS driven speed display which is easily switched between mph and km/h. Nice to know though, that if and when I change to a newer bike, I will get the new display tech.

That's not a step forward:blast

Will the NAv cradle fit with the larger TFT instruments or will it obscure it too much??

BMW will have to think carefully how they price it if it is an option, bearing in mind the KTM has it as standard now. As they'll be losing sales of Nav VI units, they'll either increase the price of the bike and make it standard, or keep the price the same, with the option to unlock Nav on the display for, say £500. That's what KTM will be doing.

Agree with Rich on the pay to play thing :clap

Find my bike would be a useful tool to have and a feature that they currently have on BMW cars

Oooo look my bike is heading to Dover in the back of a van :blast

I doubt they make that much profit on the Nav units as they are modified Garmin units, given the high price that equivalent Garmin satnavs sell for. I agree it is likely that the satnav functionality, if it is fully equivalent to the current systems, will be a cost option to be unlocked by the dealer. However, there are practical questions on capability such as the ability to design routes on a computer and upload to the bike. If it is only a basic car type system, then I could see it being included as a no cost option on all bikes and the Garmin derived units continuing to be sold for people wanting better capabilities.

I want that blue bike in my life.........

Does anyone want to buy a kidney or something :-)

Although Lupin Blue to be discontinued. Hence now we know why they sprayed the Rallye all over, like a children's bicycle - they need to use up the rest of paint they're have hanging around the back of the factory.

Will ever be the case when a buying a product, especially a car or a bike. It is indeed irrational to be annoyed, for two reasons, 1. with tft's being fitted to even <10K bikes, the update was always going to be with us sooner or later, 2. after the initial wow factor, the only real functionality benefits to be had if you choose not to have / can't afford a navigator. I use the speedo vs speed limit info on this and which, again, is in a better position.

The tft is not a significant change, an increase in HP would/will be.

But confess I felt the same when BMW did the same recently to it's m240i, which I was a first adopter of. But would I have waited a year for that (besides the factors of bmw price increases and VED changes), no, and not least because both the car and the GS will be keepers. My next bike purchase, to put along the GS in the garage, will be something entirely different and packed with whatever goodies the industry is onto next. And 18 mths later, that will be out of date as well...
