Updated Push rod

Intended to do this mod today but first hitch is that I couldn't get the front suspension compressed enough for the wishbone to clear the top 2 bolts of the clutch cover. Very close but just not quite. Need to get a small ratchet strap so I can wind it down a bit more than using a basic tie down strap.

Undo the lower front shock bolt, move the shock forward and pull up the wishbone.

I did consider that but wasn't sure if the shock would clear the wishbone enough to pull it forward. I'll give it a try.

Here’s one we prepared earlier...

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but how did this pan out Spoonz? did the replacement thrust adaptor make a difference? I've got the same symptoms on my 2013 LC and I'm thinking of doing the mod. How much longer was the replacement part than the original?

Cheers

When I took it apart my bike already had the new part. But bizarrely since pulling the clutch apart to check it works much better.

The modded part is 0.5 mm longer and has only 1 oil groove machined into it instead of 3. The logic being less oil on the plates reduces the drag.

cheers mate, I'll open mine up and have a look.

Russ, did you have a look at your clutch? What did you find?

Mine was made in Dec 2013 so I'm trying to find out if this was replaced early on by the PO or if I need to take it apart and do it myself.

I have taken the time today to do this mod.. sourced a 2018 thrust adapter from ebay part number 21-52-8-550-147
My bike is a 2014 GS Adventure.
On taking the clutch apart I found that the existing thrust adapter looks exactly like the one I have bought, one groove and 57.54mm long :blast
I will install the bought part but looking at it, I wonder if adding a thin shim washer to one end will have the desired effect?
The part that rests against the thrust bearing is a little ways down the part, the nose end going through the centre of the thrust bearing to centre it.
I have trouble selecting first even with the 'longer' part so would adding a 0.5 washer to it have the desired effect?

Anyone fitted the updated clutch push rod before (called a thrust adaptor by BMW) ? Wondering what difference it made. Have just ordered mine.

This is the bulletin - Note 3: Poor clutch disengagement and clunky gear changes in GS models up to engine No. 122EN36130280 may be caused by a clutch component that has since been upgraded – refer to your BMW dealer for details. Similar symptoms in all models may be caused by too much oil, incorrect oil, or oil additives.

My bike is July 14 and engine number is well below the affected versions cut off point. Looks easy enough to fit. apparently original is machined slightly too short so doesn't open plates far enough when engine is hot. Had this a lot on recent trip of Spain which made the gear lever stick in traffic and hard to get neutral.

I posted last year when my 2018 model gsa took a scary dicky fit on the german autobahn and the clutch wouldn't disengage then allowed intermittent partial drive.

F#cking scary , it went into dealers and clutch pack was stripped out along with final drive, BMW had not heard of any issues re the cluch or final drive assembly.

Sort of proves what a bunch of lying tw@ts that they are

Think you put 2+2 together and got 5. This problem only affected 2013 and very early 14 models and didn’t cause anything like your problem. If you walked in with an 18 bike then absolutely they told the truth.

Ahem, "a friend" who worked at BMW told me they fitted an uprated pushrod to a lot of early bikes when they were in for servicing and didn't tell anyone about the problem at the time :D..

It didn't make any cocking difference, the 2016 bike was better:blast
