Updating maps on my Zumo 400

The maps on my 400 are now well out of date, so I have decided it is time to update them, so now I need easy to understand help.

Should I buy the Europe DVD

or just buy a Europe update micro Sd card.

If I buy the DVD, how do I then get the mapping from there to my Zumo

i didnt know they did the maps on a card , so i bought the disk , and used mapsource to load them onto the SD card.

yes and yes just make sure you have a decent sized card

I too have a zumo 400 and last year purchased online, a Europe lifetime update. Cost about £69 if I remember correctly. It takes a few hours to down load and I've fitted an 8G SD card to hold the maps on the unit. I updated the maps to 2013.1 a few weeks ago - no problems, just takes time. The updates can be made 4 times a year but I don't see any need to do so - once a year is sufficient.

Alan do you get the latest mapsource software too? or is that just mapping for the zumo? was that bought direct from Garmin?

Yes and yes. I have had the zumo since 2007 and always plotted my routes using Google maps on then selecting various destinations on the unit. I wasn't aware there was such a thing a MapSource!
When it loaded with the Lifetime update I thought that in comparison with Google maps it seemed a bit clunky and not as intuitive or easy to use. I still tend to produce routes firstly from paper maps which show scenic routes; then Google maps where I can drag the track onto the desired roads; then plot the route on MapSource.
I expect that somewhere on this forum there will be people who know how to use MapSource efficiently, but I don't use it often enough to be competent with it. Google maps are easier.

Ok, I have the DVD, I have a new SD card, but how do you get the maps from the DVD to the card, I can't see any info on this action? I did say it needed to be easy

firstly you need to load the disc onto the computer and go through the set up and reg process it will guide you through this

then we will move on to putting the maps on the card i will need to refresh my memory as its ages since i did mine

The user info that comes with the DVD is vague to say the least, but as it asks for the zumo to be connected when you use it, does it automaticaly load the updated maps to the zumo, as it takes a long time running, just to install a newer version of mapsource?

And if so, how can you verify the maps version on your zumo?

Lastly for now, the newer mapsource is not as good as the older version I had loaded, I put in a postcode for a campsite that I had used on the old one, and it was no where near the actual address on this new version

at the start a box should come up with search for device

when you plug the 400 in it will tell you there is not enough space requirement and its should give you a choice of where to load the maps.

make sure the
sd card is in the reader too as this should come up in the device search.

hope this makes sense , im surprised nobody else is forthcoming with info , there is far better minds than mine here for this malarky

It never did that bit, so maybe the SD card that was in there was big enough, but how do you know it has the lates maps loaded?

Dissapointed of Reading

I had a chance to test out my new 2013 maps the other week, with a short trip to Dorset and the New Forest, I am it is fair to say a little dissapointed.

in or very near to Weymouth, I was heading to Bridport on the new ring road thing, it is not on the new 2013 maps, even though I was riding down it and when I was looking for a campground in the New Forest, I used the garmin to locate all near campsites, they were all in France

I bet when they sent men to the moon, they never used a Garmin

my 400 died a month or so back and im now on a 500 , try re loading them to your memory card via mapsource

before you buy check its the latest mapping currently 2013.20, map version and mapsource version are 2 different things.

or if you dont use mapsource just download it from the net for free in about 30 mins with a good conection.

mapsource versions are also available but require an etra 30 secs to make them work

I hadanother go at loading the newer maps last night, using the Map Install software, this time I removed the SD card first, and formatted that, then with the SD card out, I loaded the UK and Ireland maps to the Z400, that went well and surprisingly fast
Next I stuck the SD card back in the Zumo, and had a go at loading the rest of Europe, first go failed, to the extent that it froze the PC, so I had another go, but this time with nothing else running on the PC, this time it worked but took close to two hours.
