I have a Zumo 550.

I have two PC's.

I have successfully updated the maps to the 2009 version on my first PC and my Zumo. This is quite an achievement for an IT numpty like me.

I now want to update the maps on my second PC. This is giving me a slight concern.

When making the update, the on-screen instructions tell you to connect the Garmin device and turn it on. This is fine for the first PC and, of course, for updating my Zumo.

I am just concerned that if I repeat the process on my second PC, it will attempt to update the maps on my Zumo again. All I want to do is simply update the maps on the second PC.

Am I worrying needlessly?

You're probably worrying needlessly :)

The software will be wanting to check for a valid Garmin device, and the updating will be a side-effect. The software should check the version of the maps on the Zumo, and only upgrade if necessary. Anyway, what have you got to lose? The worst that's going to happen is the update takes a little longer than you intended because it's updating the Zumo a second time.

If you're still worried, attach the Zumo to a PC and copy the entire contents to a backup directory, so even if something horrible happens, you can copy it all back later :thumb2

Excellent, much as I guessed.... I was just concerned that it may get confused, go into a deep sulk and me, too.

PS....You were doing so well until you got to the bit about, "and copy the entire contents to a backup directory...." Now that is Greek! :D Though it's probably quite easy, I don't doubt.

It does re-load the maps onto the Zumo, again. :eek:

Two hours of my life now stretches before me....

Because it appears the update DVD will not run before it detects the presence of the GPS device....certainly the first instruction is to turn on and connect the GPS device....I guess that is because the map software update is limited to just one GPS device and Garmin want to make sure the customer isn't taking liberties? Or maybe the instructions are written badly and do not cater for anyone who wants to use the mapping software on more than one PC?

No doubt I am doing it the hard way. Someone will come along to tell me to open the wibber file, with a downloaded spike and copy the rootball into the hat, or some such gobbledygook. :rolleyes::D

As I said, I am a complete IT numpty, so I follow the instructions, viewing it a bit like RTFM - except IT instructions, unlike those for motorcycles and most other popular products, are written by people who themselves should read a fecking manual on how to make things simple....

Anyway, it seems to be happy updating the Zumo's internals again...... and it requires no effort on my part, other than drinking tea.....

It's just finished....

.....The PC shut down into sleep mode to herald the end, such was its exertion, over two hours.....

....The moment of truth....

....Turn on the Zumo....

.....Push the little spanner....

.....Map.....

.....Map info.....

.....City Navigator Europe NT 2009....

....so far, so good....

.....and it..........Works....

...Yippee......!
 
Cheers mate - sorry that Garmin are crap at writing software, but I'm glad it worked out in the end :beerjug:
 
Word of warning:

Updating to City Navigator (EU) 2009 maps also installs Mapsource 6.14.1 without questions asked !!!!!!

Many (if not most) people find Mapsource 6.14.1 to work much worse, and slower and with some bugs then the reliable 6.13.7 version!
And to make matters worse Garmin :ronno has decided NOT to make CN2009 compatible with 6.13.7!!
So if you update to CN2009, you might get stuck with that :spitfire 6.14.1 mapsource version as well!!

But there is hope: On the German GPS board, a solution was created. On the Dutch GPS board, someone has made a nice GUI - noob proof little programme for it, and I am working on an English translation for that...
So with that you can simply go back to run CN2009 on the old and reliable 6.13.7 :beerjug:

I quite like the new map style.

OK, it might refresh a bit slower when dragging the map around (depends on the scale, I have noticed) but it seems to work OK.

But how do you know that City Navigator (EU) 2009 does this for sure?

We're only on City Navigator 2008 now - or was it a simple mis-print? :nenau

The heading in the link you give says "City Navigator Europe NT 2008" but the sub-heading on the same screen says "City Navigator Europe NT 2009".

The Garmin website though shows 2008 as the most recent City Navigator. :blast

Leaving aside your confusion with ECM.

I can, if nothing else, confirm:

(1) I have installed City Navigator Europe NT 2009 on two PC's and my Zumo, a nerve wracking experience it was, too. :D

(2) That the installation brings in Mapsource 6.14.1 automatically.

Whether this brings about the end of civilisation in western Europe, we shall see. For me? It works fine.
