2012 GSA 1200:

Any suggestions as to the best way to upgrade my headlight which at the moment is piss poor
do not really want to carve it all about so something not to technical but worth the effort

Drop Les Wassall (his username) a PM.

He does HID kits which are pretty much plug and play and will transform your headlight.

That reminds me .... I must drop him a PM!

There is a thread on fitting LED bulbs. They have a heat sink on the back so the screw on bulb covers have to be adapted. Leaving it open is a bad idea as the headlight cannot be opened for cleaning. You will also need to make up a patch lead to connect the LED bulbs to the headlamp power connector.

The lamp is designed for a point lights source. Don't bother with cheap HID (or LED). They are too blue and have poor focus.

HIDs need to be the best quality to work properly. Les Wassal is the go-to for HID.

Ive now got LEDs (with Phillips emitters) that cost me £50 the pair. They work well subject to the fitting issues above.

Using the 6000k on Les's kits give a very slight blue tint. Still very, very bright but really gets the attention of other road users.
Can't think why.

HID is supposed to not work in lamps set for halogens, but Les Wassal's system worked well. Good dip cutoff and well focussed main beam.

My headlamp has had it's tilt adjustment repaired so dips only just enough. Halogens not problem. Les W's HIDs no problem. LEDs are ok but only just. The bean cutoff is fine but you need to adjust the angle down a bit more.

When you'd done all that you'll realize the main beam is just an accessory. I took away the OEM "auxiliary headlights" no longer any need for more foreground light and fitted a pair of long range LED spot lights. They are wired with a relay from main beam.

+1 for these, and you don't have any problems with "sealing the hole" as bendy says. Why do peeps buy cheap shite and expect it to be perfect ?? Buy these they are brilliant.
The reason I ask is that I thought I read that there where over heating problems causing them to shut off??

Maybe not in our fantastic climate.

That's good to know.

Added to my "to do" list.

The bike specific kit from Sol2b are brilliant and trouble free. I had dip and main beam bulbs as good if not better with less problems than HID units.

It was me that suffered with the Sol2b kit overheating and shutting off. It would only run for 50 minutes or so, then switchoff. Sol2b were very good about it, they said they had upgraded units due for delivery but could not confirm any date. After a few weeks I asked for and received a full refund.

I went with Cyclops units instead.

Mmm thats a shame, but mine were trouble free, unlike the HID units.

How are you getting on with the Cyclops product??

Simple enough to install??

Very happy with mine. The only issue is the LEDs are longer than HID burners or halogen bulbs so the rear covers wont fit. I cut off the cover top and used the remaining ring to trap some thin rubber sheet to fill the space.

You also need to make up a patch lead to connect the wiring loom headlamp connector to a pair of H7 bulb sockets.

The type I have seems to have sold out but these are even less money. OK they are from Hong Kong but to date I've had no problems with stuff bought from there. This has a cooling fan so might work with a taller bulb cover cap. If not, keep the heat sink outside and fit a rubber shield under the cut off bulb cover.

They wirjed from day one and gave never over heated. It required a bit if a contortionism and prestidigitation to get the bulb and controller into the shell. Once there, the stock caps go back on.
I have not once experienced any drop in power or cutting out.
