but i still have xp loaded onto d drive how do i delete the windows xp of this drive ????
or is it best to leave it and just use win 7 on my C drive ??? will if effect my laptop in time

Not really sure what you mean here.

Usually a laptop has one hard drive. It is often then partitioned by the manufacturer into 2 parts - C: (for the operating system etc.) and D: (often for a backup/restore files - especially if they don't issue a recovery disc)

You would normally boot off of the C: drive
Why are you trying to install Win 7 to the D: drive? You either want Win7 or you don't. No point having 2 versions of windows on the laptop. So install it onto the C: drive.

The setup program will detect a previous version of Windows and automatically rename all the old windows files, so they are not accessed on startup.

As Scud said the upgrade would have just renamed the windows folder to old windows where you could have fished out anything important and then deleted the rest of it. That said there are lots of reasons that you couldn't do that like the C isnt large enough for both systems and the like and you have installed it now. Is your laptop dual booting now? If it is then you have a bit more of a job but not huge to get rid of XP. If it isnt then just move the files you want to keep and delete the rest that is on the C drive. If it is then let me know and I will do some instructions to make the changes you will need to make.

If you are happy that you have a back up of every thing you want to backed up, go through the installation again, at the point where it asks you on which drive or partition you want to install to, you should see some 'advanced' options.
Delete every partition listed and then let click next, the installation will proceed on an empty hard drive, it will partition and format the drive automatically, and the installation will take less time than the first attempt because it won't be setting up the Windows.old folder.
you will then end up with a new Win 7 system installed to the C drive.

is it worth converting a laptop from xp witch it was designed to operate to windows 7 or would it be simpler to buy a laptop that is designed for win 7?

So long as your laptop has enough RAM and processor speed to cope with Win 7; (you have the Win 7 CD) it's worth putting Win 7 on it, rather than forking out for a new laptop.

Of course, if you looking for an excuse to buy a new laptop, then the Acer is rubbish and not worth doing anything at all to it, so I will do you the great favour of taking it off your hands for the cost of postage. ;) hehehe!

Don't forget that if you have someone in your household that is a student or who works in education you can get a CD version of Window 7 for about £33.00 off the web!

My laptop was running Vista but I've gone to Win 7 and it is much better - laptop is quicker.
