Upgrading from 550 to 660 while on the road - much work?

Hi Gang,

I'm holed up in Digne on day 4 of a 2 week trip and hope to take delivery of a 660 tomorrow to replace the 550 which died yesterday. Apart from a puncture repair kit and swiss army knife I'm not carrying much in the way of tools, so thought it wise to ask how much is involved.

What it boils down to is does the 660 use the same round connector on the power cable-to-cradle connection as the 550, or is it an alternative connector / hard wired? If it's the same as the 550 I'm laughing, otherwise I'll have to take off whatever plastic bodyparts I stripped in order to originally connect the 550 to the back of my accessory socket. Physically mounting it shouldn't be an issue (ooh err) as I expect it'll come with a standard 4-way hole pattern that will be compatible with my Migsel mount, so if I can use the rest of the afternoon to get tools and spare myself bodgery in the morning that will be a good thing.

Your not going to like this.....
Totaly different cable so will need to remove the old and fit the new. If the old one used the BM plug to socket on harness that will need swapping as well

Great. Oh well, we'll see what can be done. Does the 660 power lead end in bare wires then? If so I have a spare accessory socket on the fairing and can 'make' a Canbus plug by butchering my ciggie converter cable. Or the heated jacket, christ knows I haven't exactly needed it since Bourg en Bresse.

yes the cables end in bare wires, as ash says just connect it direct to the battery. not sure what your riding but everything you need comes in the box with the 660, apart from a few cable ties to tidy up the routing of the cables and if poss a couple of auto electrical connectors to crimp on to the bare wires b4 connecting to the battery. if your on a 1200 you should be able to fish the cable through behind the tank panels straight to the battery, only tools i can think you would need would be a ring spanner if your using the ram mount instead of the migsel.

Hey Ash - long time no see!

Sounds like a plan and would probably be better than robbing my spare Canbus plug and zipping the excess wherever I can, but I don't have the tools to undo the battery terminals (unless they're also philips-headed) let alone some spare crimps. Maybe I'll stop by a garage on the way tomorrow, for now I'm just happy to be navigatin' again. Hope the box isn't too big ...

Cable is part of the Zumo mount that connects to the ram if that makes sense (hard wired), btw the battery terminals are just a phillips screwdriver job to loosen off.

Lose my sense of humour? I think that'll be the last thing to go, just after my marbles.

Got the new Zumo fitted yesterday and gave it a real trial by fire today. Sorry this is short and sweet, but I'm a day behind and if you're after detail it's all here.
