Thinking of adding H&B upper protection bars to my Hepco & Becker Engine gaurds, anyone fitted them? and does anyone have a link to "how to fit them"

I got them due to paranoia about dropping the bike and cracking the tank side panels. In reality they are probably a bit OTT for this but they provide a useful point to hang aux lights off. the only downside is that they have to come off if you want to change the alternator belt or remove the tank side panels.

Fitting is straight forward although a little bit fiddly (a 10mm ratchet spanner helps). the top 2 mounts use crappy u bolts which need to be cut down to avoid them touching the oil cooler (or something, can't actually remember) I wrapped some inner tube around the bar they bolt onto to avoid the u bolts crushing it. I'm going to make up some proper clamps at some point. The bottom mounts use some rather large alloy clamp blocks which look rather crude. The lower clamp blocks recently fell off mine due to the crappy bolts coming loose and I had to make up new lower clamps as replacements were not available. the finish is also rubbish - paint flaking off after only 1 winter.

I'd struggle to recommend them all in all - probably better with a light bar instead....

Different experience for me,

Hi,
i have the top bars fitted and yes they are great for lights and they give the GS the GSA look, as well as offereing additional protection, did'nt see the need for addiional tube protection but understand why you did it, had no need to cut the bolts either just carefull on positioning
as for finish, maybe mine have had an easier life so far but think they are great they have lived up top their job too saved bike when I dropped it on my gravel drive DOH! so its thumbs up for me.

Hi All,
I agree with the above posts, in that I fitted mine without any mods to the bolts but they do get very close to the oil cooler pipes, they are also quite difficult to do up without a 1/4 drive ratchet and lots of fiddling.

Finish on mine is also pretty poor around the bottom mounts with paint flaking off after 15mths (9,000 miles) although they were not used through the winter, they will end up being powder coated and have the top fittings modified to make fitting/removing them easier.

They do look nice though and all things considered I am glad that I bought them.

Fitted mine awhile ago, like the look especially with the aux lights fitted, after riding back from Garmisch I noticed the dreaded side panel bottom clip was undone, without these bars I would be paying for a new panel at the very least so paid for themselves already:thumb2

Hi all

Just been reading with interest all your posts on crash bars, as I'm thinking of taking my 1200gs green laning, I was wondering if there was any preference for HB bars as opposed to SW's as sold by Nippy's?

The H&B bars are similar in shape to those fitted to the GSA while the SW bars more closely mirror the shape of the tank panel. Both appear similar in price so really a matter of which you prefer visually and whether you already have the engine bars as I understand they are not interchangeable.
I fitted the H&B engine and upper bars 12 months ago and have been really pleased. No problem to fit and I think they enhance the look of the bike as well as providing additional protection and brackets for extra lighting.

I don't think they're interchangeable either. I have the BMW engine bars and I want to fit the tank/upper protection bars, does anyone know where I can get something compatible with the OE bars.

Cheers,

Matt
