Not sure i have a 5litre container, sight glass showed empty, filled it 3/4 full according to sight glass.

My 09 GSA uses 1 litre of oil every 1000 miles. I left mine purposely low recently and the oil warning came on today. Sight glass is empty regardless of running it warm, side stand, centre stand etc etc. I guess some GS's use more oil than others. Its often said that they do burn oil during the first 10K miles, although mine still does at 12K.

Some Boxers burn oil for far longer than 10k with no ill effect or obvious visible signs, except an empty sight glass

Depends how they were run in - cautiously & they will use oil

Numpty owners baby them for the first 1000 miles & the rings don't seat properly :blast

I did this with my first TC after a long trip put about 3/4 litre in it, so overfilled it slightly, rode it home 300miles hard riding, no problems, was still a bit worried took it to local BM dealer, who said don't worry about it.

That said if your really worried you have overfilled it £55 gets you 4lts oil a crush washer and new oil filter and its an half hour job to change it.

My TC GSA has 20k on it and still drinks 1/4 litre every 2 to 3k miles, i have had 3 Tc engines 1 stopped drinking about 13k one at about 16k and this one, none of them's been a problem. This last one was bought with 8k on the clock last June and I don't think it was run in hard enough hence why its still drinking.

I think i might have jumped the gun, I have only just seen the last 4 post and now a little concerned with what i have done. I followed the information in the owners manual, ran the engine for 20mins on the centre stand in the drive, left it for 5 mins and checked, still no oil showing in the display glass so filled it up to the top glass.
Then i saw the last 4 post and now concerned i have over filled with oil

I'm in Stoke matey, if you want to pop over I'll check it for you.

FFS just give it a blast up local dual carriage or Mway ride it hard give it some stick round local twisties, that'll sort it out I overfilled mine once was soon back to normal after a spirited ride :green gri

So you asked for advice here, then while waiting for answers went and filed the bike up with oil anyway?:blast

When I overfilled mine, the worst it did was blow some smoke when first started. A good ride soon cleared it out.

If you're new to the forum you will need to sort out the piss takes from genuine good advice. Did you not think of buying a Honda?

Don't worry about calling the dealer, it will be fine.

As said above never, ever, ever, ever start the engine and leave it running whilst stationary, that will potentially be more damaging than 100,000 miles of severe thrashing.

Where does it say that in the owners manual? :nenau

Dead right those big engine parts bouncing around at low revs cause all sorts of stress. Just put your riding gear on, climb aboard, start the engine and ride away.
The engine will obviously get warm/hot at tickover but it's really not good for it.
I personally detest the sight glass as its all too easy to over fill and being awkward to use the job gets put off to another time. But unless you really flood the engine with oil it won't matter.
Just get out and use it.

Just how feckin' difficult does it have to be to check the oli level and top-up as per the manual? It must be simple as it's one of the very few jobs BMW is brave enough to entrust to their biker customers; everything else is 'Return to dealership'.

Section 8 pages 99 and 100 of the owner's manual says, very simply:

Engine oil

Checking engine oil level

  • The oil level varies with the temperature of the oil. The higher the temperature, the higher the level of oil in the sump. Checking the oil level with the engine cold or after no more than a short ride will lead to misinterpretation; this in turn, means that the engine will be operated with the incorrect quantity of oil.
  • In order to ensure that the engine oil level is read correctly, check the oil level only after a lengthy trip.
  • Switch off the engine when it is at operating temperature.
  • Make sure the ground is level and firm and place the motorcycle on its centre stand.
  • Wait five minutes for the oil to drain into the oil pan.
  • Check the oil level in oil-level indicator: Between MIN and MAX marks
  • If the oil level is below the MIN mark: Top up the engine oil

  • Top up the engine oil

  • Make sure the ground is level and firm and place the motorcycle on its stand.
  • Wipe the area around the filler neck clean.
  • Use the tool from the toolkit to remove cap from the engine oil filler neck.
  • Top up the engine oil to the specified level.
  • Engine oil, quantity for topping up max 0.5 l (Difference between MIN and MAX)
  • Install the cap of the oil filler neck.
===

Always make sure that the oil level is correct.

Damage to the engine can result if it is operated without enough oil, but the same also applies if the oil level is too high.

Checked the oil level this morning and it was showing still showing 3/4 full after been left all night, Took the bike out today and gave it a good run rechecked level has the manual states, still 3/4. So my next question is; how has the bike used all of its oil doing just 2000 miles since last service with no obvious leaks. Unless the dealer did not change the oil during the service.

Thanks you all for your comments help advice.
