Urgent Advice please

I'm in Stoke matey, if you want to pop over I'll check it for you.

Thanks for the offer Flipfly, Im now happy enough that i have not overfilled the oil, just like to know whats happening to it, how can it use all of the oil in a space of 2000 miles

Checked the oil level this morning and it was showing still showing 3/4 full after been left all night, Took the bike out today and gave it a good run rechecked level has the manual states, still 3/4. So my next question is; how has the bike used all of its oil doing just 2000 miles since last service with no obvious leaks. Unless the dealer did not change the oil during the service.

Thanks you all for your comments help advice.

Phil

It is not 'all of its oil' from bottom to top of the site glass is about 1/2 litre. 1/2 litre in 2000miles for the air/oil cooled boxers is normal (ish)

Sheesh - how many times!
It's not used all it oil or even the contents of the sight glass - you just didn't do the same thing when you checked it. If you don't adopt the same routine every time, the perceived oil level will be all over the place.

Thanks everyone, had a crap day at work sat at home with a mug tea laughing at this! Brilliant it's what make this site so good!

Just off to check oil level on bike!!!

As said, it hasn't used all of its oil. Top of sight glass to the bottom is 0.5l and in total it holds (from memory) 4l. 0.5l in 2000 miles is pretty normal

Mine is showing just above top of sight glass with bike on side stand. The stand has 1" of wood under the foot so what type of oil am I using?

Beast - Stop fretting!

Boxers are well known for oil use - your engine was not empty of oil it just had a level at the time below the sight glass - even if you had oil up in the cooler it is not going to be a big problem with too much oil in the engine unless you put a litre too much in which would be hard to do.. I have had 4 boxer engines (in 4 different bikes) and whenever I am touring I always overfill slightly so I don't have to carry spare oil - over a 3000 to 4000 mile tour it will be ready for topping up when I get home.

Running bike on center stand for a short while is not a problem - not advisable for long periods but it aint going to hurt for 5 mins or so. Again I have never had a sight glass leak or deform, the headers don't tend to glow unless you have a high tickover, if I run the bike I tend to do it on side stand first for a couple minutes then on the center stand for a couple of minutes then shut down.

Oil level best checked 10 mins after a good ride, I let it cool for a couple of mins on side-stand then stick it on center stand and check after 10 mins in total each to their own but this is the way I have always done it - never had a failure and although i tend to move them on at 30,000 miles I do know my first GS has now got over 90,000 on the clock and still going strong.

Stop panicking and go riding.....
