Reyno of this parish is at the moment waiting for recovery in Cheshire....

05 1200 GS

bike just died on him

When he turns on ignition sometimes completely blank instruments, sometimes everything comes on as it should, but the moment he hits the starter he hears the solenoid and everything dies again, and screen goes blank ( no lights at all)

Sounds like a dicky connection to me.... any ideas appreciated !

May be loose battery connection, or good connections but dead battery.

He's told me he's awaiting recovery... he was off for a weekend's camping within sight of jodrell bank.....I said the trouble is that if he gets the recovery to deposit him there and he can't sort it they'd probably refuse to get him home.

Just texted him suggesting it may be an indication of what's wrong if he gets a jump start from the recovery truck....

Just spoken to Reyno, when thehid lights power up everything fails. My thoughts are duff battery, told him get recovery man to hook up jumpleads and see if it sorts the prob .

Try this to eliminayte the headylight after cleaning the terminals and battery posts? http://www.r1200gs.info/misc/tricks.html
1. Turn the ignition on and allow the startup-check cycle to complete. The headlights will be off (this is normal).
2. Hold turn-signal cancel switch for 4-5 secs.
3. Hold right turn-signal switch for 4-5 secs.
4. Start engine.
5. Lights should remain OFF.
This will reset next time you switch off the ignition. The headlights will be off, but the running lights and tail light will remain on.
Note 1: Nikos Skarentzos wrote to say that you can use this trick to turn the lights off while you're riding, that is, after you've started the engine. You still have to stop and turn the engine off before you can get the lights back on, however.

Note 2: Tim Jones wrote to say that on his '07 Adv model (without servo brakes) just hitting the high beam or passing switch will turn on the low beam again. This apparently does not work on '05 and '06 models. Tim put a video clip showing this on YouTube.com

If the recovery fella has a volt meter it would be worth checking battery voltage with ignition off it should be around 12.4v -12.6v maybe higher depending on how long since it stopped.Then turn on the ignition and see if it drops dramaticaly.I would suspect a bad main earth or live connection to be the fault as the battery would have to be well fecked to cause a problem once the engine is running.The only time this maybe the case is if he has a charging fault,once jump started the voltage should be around 14.4v with the engine running.
Hope he gets mobile again without to much drama.
 
if everything fails when the HIDs come on, maybe try disconnecting them.....it may let the bike do its checks and possibly start?
 
Not heard from him for about an hour now.... so will post an update when he gets back to me ( phone ringing out)

You've all missed the obvious!!

Jodrell Bank!! Radio scope drinking the canbus juice, area 53 round there, nearly crashed a car there once, nothing to do with my crap driving, nust have been the 'Bank':eek:
