Funny you should say that.........There have been many documented cases of alarms not de-activating whilst the bike is parked near a big radio installation.......I had one when in a layby in Germany or Poland or somewhere out that way and the alarm was totally misbehaving......we pushed it a few hundred yards along the motorway :eek: and suddenly it would disarm properly and ran normally.

If Reyno does have an alarm on his bike, it could well be worth shifting it down the road a bit :nenau

Just got back to me.... Recovery couldn't sort it or start it.... so he's been taken to the campsite and he's going to try to sort a battery tomorrow... ( consensus is definitely the battery...he's had one go on him before and caused similar symptoms.....)

Oh the joy of the open road ...

Had the same happen in France on an autoroute, lorry driver watched me for a while then suggested I push it down the on-ramp - it worked!
 
Happened to me a couple of weeks ago after pulling in to check map near Elvington.
Everything seemed ok but when I pressed starter there was a loud click then everything died.
Carole Nash recovery (AA) managed to jump start but as soon as he disconnected his battery bike died.
Checked that bike was putting charge in and everything looked ok.
His diagnosis was that the battery had probably dropped a cell and died.
New battery fitted and all ok so hopefully this will prove the same tomorrow.

Cheshire Batteries in Crewe is the best bet, they will almost certainly have one instock and at the best price too. Bryn, let him know that I can/will buy one for him tomorrow morning and deliver it to him at the campsite ....you have my number:thumb

Reading with interest. Don't think I will wait for it to happen to me... Just ordered a new Odyssey PC 535. Hope it saves me from a similar fate.
 
When he gets back/is sober I'd be interested to know:

did this suddenly fail or had there been a struggle to start recently or other symptoms?

oem battery?

how old was the battery?
 
HIDs can be useful in giving you a pre warning to a battery fail :thumb2

Also light the road ahead :)

I think they need a big amp draw to fire them up then once on draw less than a standard bulb.
 
"Sudden Battery Death" with exactly the same symptoms as described in the OP is quite common on F800s with the OE Varta battery (or a replacement of the same brand and type). It often happens at around the 2 year mark. Just replace the battery with a Yuasa and all will be OK (and when it does die, it will do so gradually, giving you plenty of time to organise a replacement rather than dying suddenly and leaving you stranded.
 
"Sudden Battery Death" is something common to anyone who regularly uses an optimate or any long term trickle charger

Ken, Reyno's bike has been sitting in my garage since September as he's moved back down from Preston to my neck of the woods....

Wouldn't start after about 6 weeks ( understandable I suppose)
Wired it up to the optimate, very slow to go green....and didn't sound that healthy when starting after that.

Went for a run about a month ago and it started fine.. but only for about 50 miles.

After that put back in the garage and optimate left on.

Started first time Yesterday when he picked it up, got him nearly to the campsite and just died.

Today with Tosser assistance :beerjug: battery obtained and problem solved :)

( not sure how old it was or which one )

Optimates and their ilk have their uses, but one of those uses SHOULD NOT be to keep hooked up to a bike on a daily basis if you don't expect to find yourself unexpectedly stranded with no warning :augie

Just my humble opinion, but we've seen it SO many times it's ridiculous :rolleyes:

What would you say is the causal linkage between maintenance charging and battery damage?

If this is the case (and I have no reason whatsoever to doubt your word Sir :)) - what is the point of Optimate and their ilk? I bought one early last winter in the expectation that my bike would be un-used for weeks at a time - as it turns out, there were very few weeks when I didn't get out on it at least once. Having plugged it in every time I put the bike away for a month or so, I got bored and lazy and haven't used it since. :rolleyes:

Are you saying that they should only be used occasionally? Or not at all? Or under specific circumstances, such as...?

If they are not designed to be left hooked up as a "maintenance charger" then the manufacturers are misleading all of us.
p.s. I admit to having been using one on my last 4 bikes, sometimes right through the winters(too soft to ride). Up to now they have always kept the batteries tip top.:confused:
 
I've been using an Optimate for 8 years on my 1200GS. It's still on it's OE battery.

Modern batteries simply fail suddenly, unlike old lead/acid types which deteriorate gradually. The batteries on my old Saxo and my work's van both were fine one moment and fecked the next time I tried to start the car/van.
