The USB ports on the 1300 won't charge my Samsung Galaxy phone. They will charge my Sena 50s and Garmine Zumo XT. I have tried the tank compartment port and both side case and top case ports. Could these ports not be delivering enough amperage for phones?

The included USB charging interface offers 5 V, with max. 2.1 A charge current (charging power max. 10.5 W).

I think OP's phone standard charger works at about 3A on 5V tension.
But, but... they should draw power even on lower amperage feeds.

By "not charging" do you mean the phone doesn't seem to recognised it is connected to a power source, or that it just doesn't manage to increase battery percentage over time (or does it extremely slow)?

Does the charging port on your phone contain compressed fluff particles from your pockets? Worth checking.

Dealerships don't understand stuff like usb amperage, they just see that it works on most stuff and that's it

What you are asking then is: Should the USB port on my awesome spanking new 1300, charge my Samsung Galaxy phone, yes or no?

If the answer is no, take BMW to task for flogging you a not fit for purpose vehicle…… or buy a different phone.

If the answer is yes, then take BMW to task for flogging you a not fit for purpose vehicle….. or buy a different phone.

doesn't recognize being plugged into the port at all. As mentioned sena and zumo charge fine, and phone charges fine on any plug in usb charger. It seems these usb ports simply do not like my particular phone. Phone is 4-5 years old and battery capacity has faded a bit. Maybe this particular battery is drawing too many amps and the GSs protection system is refusing it power

Thanks for the helpful answer moderator, good job

That's a possibility. But I'm taking a (very) wild guess.
It might also be that the phone doesn't accept a charge below a certain current level. I'd try to find an old 1A charger (or another 2.1A) and see if it does the same.

I too agree that the dealer will most probably be clueless as well.

tried several cables, also the usb ports do charge my old unused galaxys

See post #8.

You have now ascertained that the USB ports on your bike work and you have satisfied yourself that it’s not the cable…. Time to buy (or use) a different phone. Taking BMW to task is still an option, even so.

If other phones charge up...

It must be the phone then...take it too a phone person and ask them what the problem might be.?

Not any old phone person mind. One that understands stuff like usb amperage. One assumes that such an individual is available in Canada, though (given the country’s vast area) they might not be immediately local. That’ll be where the new 1300 will come into its own. Do though be sure to check the weather forecast and, naturally, do not rely on the duff phone!

I know its not the answer your wanting, but maybe a 3rd party wireless charger mount such as the quadlock or similar is an option.
Although it does seem silly when you have the little hole for it, but you could use that for something else then.

Very strange problem though, the newer smartphones require even more power, I would have thought BMW had catered for this.
You have a phone that doesn't like BMWs 😁

I have a Samsung S21 and its had charging port problems for a while, I found that the only UBS lead that now works is a GoPro lead?
On the bike I have the quadlock wireless charger.... I bought it for that reason.

Had a look online, out of curiosity, and the issue might be the phone, not the power feed on the bike.

There are several posts online by galaxy users who complain that (after a software update) their phone stopped charging in their cars, but works fine from home charger.
Seems to be the phone not “accepting” the feed from the car/bike charger.

My understanding is that they do a basic handshake before the power flows and the galaxy doesn’t go through this step with those chargers.
Onboard USBs are - generally - not as good as the chargers one can buy from, say, Anker and other makers.

I’d try to see if there is other software updates for the phone.
Some people suggested to test using developer mode in the android settings, but this depends on how bothered you are and how much you want to tinker with it.

Could be tripping the canbus overload protection ‘fuse’ if it’s drawing more than 2 amps.

Ignition on, plug the phone in, see that it’s not charging, leave the ignition on and then plug something else ( with a low current draw) into the usb.
If it also doesn’t charge then switch off the ignition to reset the canbus and see if the second device now charges. If it does you’ll know your Samsung has tripped the canbus.
