anybody have any experience with the lovely revenue commissioners and VAT on used bikes..

my buddy just brought in a 2007 Honda Hornet but due to its low mileage (3,000 kms) . The Woman that inspected the vehicle said he had to stump up for 1k VAT as well.

I know that there is a section on the ROS website that explains that to qualify it has to be 6 months AND 6k mileage, but on a four year old bike?

anyone got any experience with this?

nah the miles/km have to be over the limit. many lads have gottencaught out buy this. best thing do is get a used speedo with high miles, fit that on for the office and then put orisinal back on

I have brought in several bikes over the years and all would have been over 6 months old AND under 6000km's and I have never been caught for VAT.

Is the seller VAT registered?

I have bought bikes through my company and recovered the VAT where appropriate - always new or ex demo models. I've used them as a company vehicle.

Otherwise the selling price should be inclusive of VAT as far as I know.

I think!

Sorry, is this an import? Probably spouting bollocks then.

nah he isnt a company.. just a biker who spotted a mint hornet

he bought the bike in the UK from a honda dealer...

but we were both surprised when the VRT woman said he would be liable for VAT cause of the mileage..

now I understand why thats there, to stop people buying almost new bikes/cars and trying to sneak them in as second hand..

but a four year old hornet??? I am surprised..

well up until this year you just had to go tax office, hand in log book, tick saying was over 6k and thats it pay the vrt.

now its dont in the VRT so they inspect the bikes too. so unless speedo has over 6k hard to avoid it.

always been there but before they never checked up on it

vat

a very good friend of mine just experienced the same treatment . He ended up paying double the intended amount to the cnuts. He asked them could he come back after the weekend with the required mileage on the clock, the answer was that he could but that the bill was now his and would not go away.

Can s/he claim a rebate on some of the UK vat?
Otherwise vat has been paid twice on the same machine.

vat

I was faced with the same predicament a few years ago. Drive it around till the mileage is right and then import it. The Lord helps them that helps themselves!

again, trip to breakers yard for a spare dash with high miles will sort it out

If the bike was bought off a dealer I'd ask the dealer to formally certify that a new speedo was fitted at .........................
You get my drift

just got off the phone with revenue for my buddy... they said both criteria MUST be met
they don't care if its a 1954 Indian with 1 wheel and a spike where the seat used to be.. if it has less than 6k its "new".... un-fvckin believable... this countries tax laws really gets up my hole sometimes..

Gerry....I like your thinking..... I like it a lot..

problem is if you showed the bike the mileage will be recorded and the revenue will insist on you paying the vat
if you could get a letter stating the clock was changed it should sort that but it could be hard to get a dealer to put that in writing

thats always been the way. just until now never had bring them the actual bike for them to inspect.

same happens with cars. now they are starting to inspect them as say oh wait you have pay more as has certaine xtras.

in fact vrt is illegal. ireland gets fined for each VRT item by the EU but coz still make a profit they keep doing it.

this week the EU announced they will be taking gov to court in relation to the vrt as its against eu law and also against irish law

heard something about that, some guy in the north is suing the goverment because you can buy any goods on the common market bar a car which has the vrt

suggestion

Tell your mate to inform then he has changed his mind and taken it back out of the country (up North). Get some evidence of this, Then put some mileage on it and bring it back in a few weeks time. They used to be quite lenient about this.
Last time I brought one in, they hadn't a clue, but they've smartened up apparently.

good luck

going on for years. EU fine the country every year for it. just now when some one made huge issue over it the EU were like hang on, we taught you had stopped this and now making big issue over it.

LEgally your not able charge VRT twice. you can charge an admin tax for paperwork

Dont forget when you do pay vrt you are able claim lot back. also if you go in with a high vrt price, they are basing it on the incorrect prices.

print few adds off and go look here you daft twit, these are what the same year and model sell for. they will usually refund you the diff and then go claim for the rest.

get around 30% back

but in reality we shouldnt have pay any of it as total scam and illegal

cheers mate

they are smartening up, when he made mention to the girl that on the VRT calculator it didnt give him a 'pop-up" or notification that VAT may be payable, she checked it herself and left a voicemail for him telling him if he checked the website on the right hand side it has a "important information" section.. about extra charges maybe liable...

yeah he is not going to pay the 1k, so I will setup a rig in my garage, and run the 3k up on it over the course of a week or so.... and maybe a quick trip to the uk... then come back to them with it at a later date...with a different person (family member or me probably) reg the bike and then change it over to him...

most insurance companies will allow you 1 week insured under different plate. just insure it and clock up miles. running it on a rig may not be best for the engine.

even loan it to mates and tell them each to go for good run at weekend or during week.

heck give it to me and i will use it for work. would quickly get one 1 or 2k up in a week for ya

if they have it on record that may not work, once they have seen the bike and recorded the details
