Used R1150GS prices dropping fast - thinking of bailing out

The market is flooded with used R1150GS as owners bail out before the winter and place deposits on the new R1200GS that is rumouted to ship in March. GS prices are dropping as a consequence.

I'm not a fair weather biker, I use mine most days throughout the year so I can't do without a bike. But with prices dropping fast and me wanting a new bike in the spring, I'm thinking of dumping the GS and buying an old hack for use through the winter.

I really fancy an airhead - possibly R80/100 GS or RT. I wouldn't pay much and putting 6000 miles on over the winter wouldn't do much to the bike's price. I wouldn't loose as much on the old bike as I would if I kept my R1150GS until the spring. Plus I'd get to play on a different bike, one I might even keep when I get the new GS. Bath Road have a pretty nice airhead RT in at the moment so I might take it out for a spin later this week.

Tell me I don't have a screw loose.

Not Sure ?

:( Not sure on that one. Tonight was browsing MCN classifieds and asking prices seem to be the norm, and most Bikes take a nose dive this time of year ?? Thing is did the 1100GS take a bashing when the 1150 came out ?? The values are still pretty good today for an 1100 so i would not be too concerned !! Hang onto it !!

The old 1150 will always be in demand:D

Hang on to it for another year....

I reckon by about next June this place is going to be packed with people bitching about faults and recalls they've found and had on the R1200GS. As well as that, it'll be a while before you can get all the goodies to bolt onto it. This is where BMW will make another fortune:shoot:
Having been in the motor trade for years I'd never buy a brand new model of any bike or car, most car manufacturers have the "New Facelifted" or "Mk II" model ready at the original launch, so when the good old general public have finished the R&D for them they can make the mods and sell it as an upgraded model.

On second thoughts you're another well paid IT wallah who can afford to do some R&D...

YOU DON'T HAVE A SCREW LOOSE!:D

My wife would dispute the well paid bit, but your points about doing R&D are well made. The original plan going back to March this year was to get a new bike in March 2004. I'd be up to 20K miles, supposedly the optimum time to sell a GS, and upgrade to the latest model. I use the GS as a working tool as well as a toy. I opted out of my company car scheme and with the cash I get each month plus the 30p/mile for business trips I get from work/taxman it isn't so silly to want to change the bike frequently.

As an aside it's interesting to do the calculations on what it costs to run a GS. Excluding fixed costs - all of which stay pretty constant whether you ride the bike or not, the figures are:

20K miles in 16 months.
Depreciation assumed at £2000 from new = 10p/mile
Corrected fuel consumption at 41mpg (I generally get better but allowed for oil as well) = 9p/mile
Tyres - Metzler Tourance ever 7500 miles cost £146/pair fitted = 2p/mile
Servicing £600 = 3p/mile

Total variable costs: 24p/mile.

Fixed costs per year - tax & insurance - £390
Interest - £590 or £295 - whether you buy outright or get a loan you are still effectively paying or losing interest on that money. Assume £8500 borrowed at 7%APR or saved at 3.5% net.
(Both these add up to another 7p/mile at 15000 miles per year)

Costs of accessories & safety gear - how much time have you got for me to list them :D

Surprising isn't it? It could be argued that the whole of the depreciation shouldn't be counted as variable as the price of the bike would still drop if it were left in the garage with no miles on it (although not by as much)

Of course you have to offset all of these costs against the grin factor on a sunny Sunday afternoon and the feeling of satisfaction as you cruise past all the cage-bound drives on the way into Bristol in a morning. Cost? Priceless.

Investment or motorbike .....?

Depends how you view your steed

I don't give a toss what mine's worth (2002 1150), and I'm keeping it until it falls apart

Didn't buy this thing to speculate/accumulate, bought it to keep me grinning which it does every time I go out

:D

Have to agree Retro, its the wanna haves that screw the rest of us up every time. Imagine the egg on BMW's face if we all said bollocks to the new model and just kept the good old 1150GS. They would be left with another C1 on their hands and look at what happened to them. Its the bloody dozy idiots that fall for the marketing campaigns that infuriate me and drive the prices of the second hand market down. Ask yourself why ( IF) the second hand price of the 1150 will drop due to demand of a better ( read untested and unknown quality) model. No ultimately it will be the poor sods whio have to have the latest toy on the market that will drive the second hand prices down and more fool them if they get shit part ex deals etc for their bikes.

No, its not the 1200 that we should fear but the people that fall for the MUST HAVE market hype. When we do sell our 1150's in two years time when they are sought after because the original brief behind the bike has lost the plot then we will all be very smug indeed.

Bugger me Mike you sound like my boss! Are you and accountant?

Played the waiting game with my Pan Enormous, a 2001 model ST1100 and I was looking to chop it in - went into the dealers just after the STX1300 moped was launched and the dealers laughed me out of the shop as they had '"more of them old things than they could shake a stick at".

So I taxed/insured it and ran it for another year and went back to the dealer, oops no ST11's in the showroom as the STX had bombed big time. Now they wanted to talk trade in and I said fook off and went and got myself the hack GS instead.

Many STX's to be had in BMW showrooms where they were traded for 1150RT's

Why buy new ?

If you dont want to see big depreciation buy second hand......

And private too.....

Brought an immaculate 23,000 mile 1998 1100 gs on a `S`pate with full BMW history and luggage 12 months ago for £4,300.....

Value today private with another 9,000 miles on ?.......

Got to be £4,000+:D :D :D

GS ERS - BAING RECALLED BY BMW UK

BMW UK HAVE ISSUED A RECALL NOTICE TO GS ERS PRODUCED RECENTLY

WHEN RUNNING HOT ( IN TRAFFIC ) THE GS WILL REV ERRATICLY
THIS IS DUE TO THE LOOM BEING PLACED TOO CLOSE TO THE ENGINE.
THE BRAIN DOES NOT READ THE ENGINE CORRECTLY AND DOESNT FUEL IT PROPERLY
ALL GS BMW OWNERS ARE FROM SATURDAY 11-10-2003 GOING TO GET THEIR BIKES RECALLED IF THEY WERE MANUFACTURED AT A CERTAIN PERIOD AT BMW GERMANY
BAD MANUFACTURING I SAY-
SO BE CAREFULL , WHEN YOU BUY MAKE SURE ALL RECALL WORK CARRIED OUT

"20000miles the optimal time to sell a GS"
It's only at that point the bike is starting to be fully run-in!!!
Keep it and ride it 'til the 1200 is fixed.
You can still get £5000 for an early R1150GS with stealers looking for £5K+ for later R1100GSs.
What's all the calculations about, just enjoy it...
Pat.

Andy,

If you follow that logic, there would never have been an 1150GS, or 1100 or...or...or...or... :) :) :)

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I have decided that I will be buying the new GS - some people like new cars/bikes frequently, some don't. I do - simple as that (of course in the past my company has kept me supplied with frequent changes of vehicle, now it's out of my own pocket!). I won't be unloading my 1150 until I get the new bike. Prices are depressed at the moment because a) winter is coming up and b) more fair weather GS riders than usual are bailing out ready to buy the new bike in spring. The dealer tells me that prices should firm up again for used bikes in the spring so I'd only lose out if I bailed now and riding it through the winter (as I did all last winter) won't affect the price too much.

Where did this come from.....have not seen anything about it anywhere...

Not really worried about what my bike's worth. I came back to GS ownership after a very costly foray into sportsbike land. My previous GS was a well worn R80GS '81 vintage with a stack of miles on board. Loved it so much, missed it loads, realised it was the only bike i'd ever actually DONE anything on apart from just riding about on. I don't need to be riding the very latest kit, I'll leave it to the power ranger types. I shall keep my 2002 GS until something else really, really takes my fancy...can't see that happening for a very long time though. Why sell too soon, the next owner gets all the benefits......................However, if you can afford it...who gives a shit................get the latest toy on the block and enjoy.

Marcus :)

My thoughts exactly.

Slatting

By you lads know how to slat a bike that has not even hit the streets yet. Good job car and bike manufacturers don't take any notice of everthing written on bulliten boards. How are bikes supposed to progress if they don't develop. Reading the board they are still issuing recalls for the existing 1150. Brilliant bike that it is other manufacturers have caught up and are now producing lighter more powerfull bikes similar to the GS.

cant wait till March

Wonder of Bakes sells humble pie in his shop? Sure going to need a big one when the new GS lives up to expectations.;)
