Using a Phone with an AutoCom - Help Needed

Hi All,

I would like to buy an AutoCom and was wondering if a phone can be connected to it and used whilst on the go ?

1. Will the phone need voice dialing and answering ?

2. How does the phone connect to the AutoCom ? Is it possible to do it by bluetooth ?

3. If the phone has a music player like the new Sony Walkman phones could I kill two birds with one stone and not have to connect an MP3 player or iPod ?

I've been biking for years, but only heard of an AutCom this summer, I've looked on the website, but I'm still not clear what exactly they can do. It would be nice to have a demo, I wonder if they'll be at the Motorcycle Show. Any help would be much appreciated.

Yep.

Yep. (personally I wouldn't bother with the dialling bit....why not just stop to make the call..recieving them is more usefull though)

By a lead supplied by autocom, plugged into an adaptor stuck in your phone....varies according to phone model.
Bluetooth kit is coming apparently but not out yet AFAIK.

The Autocom Bluetooth kit has been out for some while. Basically, it's just a Nokia kit and an extra Autocom lead.

I used it on Tossers-on-Tour this year - it worked well except that the Nokia control button didn't like getting wet. The other problem is that the Nokia Bluetooth kit doesn't 'talk' to my Sony-Ericsson phone (whereas my Sony-Ericsson Bluetooth kit in my car will talk to my Nokia work phone).

I intend to replace the bike kit with a Sony-Ericsson Bluetooth kit.

yea.. but on the Sony i don't think the bluetooth will let you play music... you'll need hard wired for that.

And the Sony has a "magic word" for voice control so you can voice dial,ans and reject calls with the autocom

I'm going into town this afternoon what should I ask the helpfull people at the shop, if I want the same bit of kit ??

Look, I'm really sorry everyone, but I just know F**ck all about mobile technology, I've only ever owned a really old mobile phone that an old boss of mine gave me, and I only learn't how to do that predictive text on it about a month ago !!! I'm a mechanically minded man, please forgive my ignorance.

I have my Nokia connected to my Autocom such that I can listen to the phone’s music (FM radio in my case) and answer incoming calls whilst riding.

1. set the phone to ‘autoanswer’ (on the Nokia menu this is settings-accessory settings-headset-automatic answer-on). This causes the phone to answer automatically when its headset is plugged in.

2. plug the Autocom jack-plug into your phone using a supplied Autocom adapter. The phone now thinks it has its headset plugged-in.

3. tune-in the phone’s radio or turn on its music.

4. set off, singing at the top of your voice to all the tracks (including whilst sitting at traffic lights).

4. upon an incoming call the phone auomatically mutes the music and answers the call. After the caller hangs-up the phone un-mutes the music and you can continue singing.

The only problems I have encountered are: 1. The phone answers all incoming calls (including the calls from people you don't want to speak to) and 2. Your pillion (if plugged in) is privy to all your incoming calls (beware!)

I have not used bluetooth but presumably it’s the same principle as above without the cable connection.

Dear Neily,

My phone is a fairly standard Nokia 6610. I didn't need to purchase any extra cables, just the Autocom connector block ('hands free adapter' p/n 52) which plugs into the bottom of the phone (just like the supplied Nokia headset plug). The connector block has a socket for the Autocom 3.5mm stereo jack plug to plug into.

They have been there every year I have attended, and they are most helpful and knowledgeable. Worth having a chat to them on the stand as they really do know their onions and will help you find a solution to fit your needs and budget.

Er.. Infact the cables and blocks bought from Autocom are rather overpriced. I have a siemens fone connected the the 2.5mm 3 pole jack using an adapter bought at a normal mobile phone shop. Money saved? 7 squids

I haven't even looked at the Autocom price but guessed it would be OTT

i have a sony ericsson and have a "magic word" set up for voice dialling - it works perfectly - except.....

if you call someone and get their answerphone you have no way of hanging up the call - i have my phone under my seat - so if i make a call that goes to answerphone at the other end i have to stop and take the seat off to get the phone to hang up the call......rubbish!

as far as i am aware there is no phone that has a "magic word" or voice command to end a call........so there's no such thing as hands free.....what ever system you use you always need to push the little red button to end the call if you get an answerphone......fine if you are in a car - but trick on a bike....
