Just bought a Quest 1 not realising MapSource is only PC compatible and not for Macs. Has anyone made this mistake before and found a solution?

Roadtrip

You used Roadtrip Hops? I downloaded it earlier but am new to all this Sat Nav/GPS stuff. Bought the Quest for a trip to Morocco. Will Roadtrip do the job? Help!

Should do, you can plan routes exactly as with MapSource. I use it pretty successfully :thumb

I use roadtrip now and once loaded it's very simple to use and does exactly what you want without fuss. Definately worth doing.

Roadtrip

Thanks guys. My problem/confusion is that I have a 2nd hand unit with City Select Europe V6 loaded, no access to MapSource, unlock codes etc because I don't have a PC. Can I just ignore all that, connect the Quest to my mac, open RoadTrip and start planning/loading routes? Have to say, I haven't tried yet, so apologies if I sound like a dummie, but this is my first Sat Nav and I stupidly assumed it would all be so easy! I also wanted to use Olaf's Maroc topo maps but without MapSource I guess that's a no-no too?

some problems with road trip:

1) it's rubbish in comparison with mapsource. some major features mysteriously absent, such as postcode search.

2) mapsource is difficult to find your way around at first, but road trip just baffles me. yes, i can plan journeys on it, but only if i absolutely had to.

3) you need to install mapsource and all your maps on a pc first, then convert them to RT friendly files with a special program from garmin. then transfer to your mac and imort them into road trip. really, WTF were garmin thinking?

i've tried, i really have, but i now run mapsource on a pc, or on my mac in windows using a virtual machine (a bit of software that allows other operating systems to run inside the mac OS).

in short, no.

apart from the issues i've mentioned above, to get a computer to talk to the gps unit, you need mapsource (or roadtrip) intalled + the relevant unlock codes.

GARMIN QUEST 1

Thanks Cookie. I think the way forward is to get my Mac running windows on a virtual machine so I can use MapSource - there's far more advice in these forums that's MapSource based, including Olaf's Maroc maps, than RoadTrip. Would you mind telling me how this is done - what I need so I can run windows ? I use an Intel-based Mac Pro. Cheers, Lee

i use VMware Fusion, but you could use parallels which does a similar job.
then you need a copy of windows, i'd be inclined to use XP. it runs better on my macs even with 4GB of RAM fitted.
installation is very easy, then windows just runs in a window in mac OS-X :)

alternatively, install windows using bootcamp (check the video) which should have come free with your mac. it means rebooting the mac into windows when you need to use it, but you save the cost of the VM software, and it should run faster.

GARMIN QUEST 1

Cheers Cookie. I'm going to load XP onto the Mac and run it in Bootcamp - found a seller of XP, full licensed version for £35. Thanks for the advice. The Quest lives to see another day!

that's a cheap deal on XP, i paid nearly seventy quid for a copy a couple of weeks back. fortunately, it was someone else's money :D

i must retract the above statement. you can now install CN2010 directly into roadtrip on a mac, straight from the DVD, without dicking around with a PC :)
