Hi All
We are after a bit of advice here
We are off to Morocco for 2 weeks in September on our R100GS
And it’s about time to think about Vaccinations
We hope to get out and see a bit of the country so might be camping some of the time and will be trying to get out of the tourist areas
My question is what Vaccinations should we have?
I know that hepatitis A, typhoid, polio and tetanus are recommended but are not mandatory
How much of a risk of these diseases is there out there?
I don’t like the thought of having lots of unnecessary injections but on the other hand I don’t fancy getting typhoid

Thanks for your help Bob

Not a high risk, but have the recommended ones. The injections are only unnecassary if you don't come into contact with any disease.
ONLY drink bottled water which is available everywhere. Coca Cola is good for an upset tummy and rehydration.

Maroc jabs

I recommend you check with your local surgery. The nurse is likely to deal with it, not your GP. When I checked the nurse even mentioned malaria depending on area vivitied and time of year. In my case I had the less serious Hep. (C ?), not malaria, and some of my old jabs were still 'valid'.

As for bottled water.. I don't think it essential everywhere, but then it's possible you may be unlucky with tap water.
When you realise what happens to the discarded plastic bottle (it's burnt! or dumped on the town rubbish heap) you may want to consider bringing a canteen or strurdy bottle and filling it from hotels and restaurants. I did, and didn't suffer any ill affects.

Attention to hand cleaning is important -antiseptic hand cleaner is useful.

regards
David

Most incidences of travellers' diarrohea are caused by poor personal hygiene, like not washing hands before using them to stuff the gob. Every restaurant will have a small wash handbasin in the corner, so do as Mummy told you! :rob

I drink town water everywhere in Morocco. There's many hundreds of thousands of Moroccans who work for ONE (Moroccan water board) who would be extremely pissed off to hear Timolgra's condemnation of their best efforts.

I answered your vaccination question on the HUBB and have updated the knowledgebase accordingly.

And exactly which condemnation was that:nenau

I had my jabs

Thanks for all the feed back chaps
In the end I went to practice nurse at my GPs clinic she looked up all the up to date info and asked what we would be doing out there and I had
Hepatitis A
Typhoid
Diphtheria
Tetanus
Polio

They where all free and they did them there and then just 2 injections with a booster for the Hepatitis A in 6 to 12 months then it will last 10 years

The only other one I might have later is Hepatitis B
This is more for if we have an accident and end up in local Hospital

Let’s hope not but it’s better to be safe that the other one isn’t it

Has anyone heard of anyone getting Typhoid or any other horrible disease on holiday in Morocco?

Lucky you getting free innoculations done there and then.

My local (Scottish) GP wrote a prescription. I then had to go & get the requisite drugs from the chemist after paying the NHS prescription charge & keep them in my fridge until I could get a return appointment with the GP surgery for the practice nurse to then inject me. The practice nurse actually had a fridge full of the various vaccinations so I remain unclear why the GP went down the prescription route when he could simply have sent me to the nurse in the next room.

Two visits to the nurse as they would only give the Diphtheria / Tetanus & Polio shots on the first visit, and the Hepatitis A / Typhoid on a second visit.

If you remember to go back for the Hep A booster after 12 months you are considered immunised for 10 years instead of the 3 years you obtain if you only receive the first injection.

Morocco
