Valeo let go

Hi there,
My Valeo starter has just let go of it's magnets, i've ordered a new magnet housing, but the armature that spins inside it, has two gouges out of it, opposite sides, one top and one bottom. Can I still use the armature, any way to test it before putting it all back together?

The proper way to test an armature is measure the resistance on the commutator (the windings sit 180 degrees apart) if it's just the steel that's damaged you can trim it up with a file. You also need to check each winding to make sure it is not shorting to the metal of the armature.
A pro auto electrician will carry out a flash test on the windings at a voltage that you probably don't have access to.
