Just done my first 6,000 mile service on my new 1200 today (the dealer did the 600 mile service). The valves were still spot on - no adjustment required.

Is this the norm? I never had that on my previous boxers - they always needed adjustment.

Anyone else had a similar experience?

They only need adjusting if the clearence is incorrect. After 6,000 miles yours happen to be correct. They tend to tighten in the first few miles and then go the other way, thats why they are checked at regular service intervals. If the job was done correctly...
no adjustment.. is good news:clap

I've done many valve adjustments over 80+k miles on my 3 12GS's. Several times I've had to adjust 2-3 but most times 1 or none. :)

Do you change the gaskets each time? Of course I understand that the dealer will change them each time!................funny old thing that!

Did mine at 12000 and had to adjust the exhaust valves by a tad .Inlets were fine.:thumb

This is all good news...............! In the past when ever delaers serviced my oilheads they would always chnage the gaskets............funny old thing - whoops, that'll be another $50+!

I did buy a new set but will keep them on the shelf.

With the old air heads of course you did have to change them (yeeaah - I know it was possible to get away without changing them but dodgy).

As for adjusting the valves the older bikes always required adjusting. At least when they do need it they are pretty easy to do. My mate over the road just had to do the valves on his KTM Adventure - all four cams out plus all the body work etc for new shims!

Not that it's the same bike, but I had an 1100GS that did 66000 before I sold it to get my 1200, and as I had it from new I knew it NEVER needed its valves adjusting! A record??

That's amazing! (is that not a TV series?!) I had two 1100 Gss and I founhd that they needed adjusting every time - not all the valves and only maybe a small amount. Is it time that BMW increase the service intervals??
