Simple question . I can get the .30 valves done ,should i do the other side at the same time . .15 doesnt want to play ball .Do i rotate back round to TDC and then adjust . Tried earlier engine is noiser. What am i doing wrong .Help please ,Should both sets of adjusters be slack at TDC ie inlet and exhaust on same side ..??

Sir read manual and sir is still very confused ..

If that`s the case, then you must be checking on the wrong stroke.

It needs to be on the compression stroke....which means both valves will be fully closed....so that there`s a clearance on each valve (or SHOULD be)

Take both plugs out and turn the engine to TDC (top dead centre) The OT mark on the flywheel is TDC

A pencil down the plug hole will tell you when the piston is approaching TDC, or if it’s gone past., (watch your eyes with the pencil!)

On one side of the engine all four valves should be just a little loose, that side is on compression. Set the valves on that side, then rotate the engine one complete turn and do the other side. Rotate the engine one way only, look in the book, because I’ve forgot which way that is :o

Advanced workers,
Using four gauges is better than two, adjust the set screw and gap ‘minutely’ so all four gauges feel the same. I know it makes no sense, but believe me it does make the engine run smother. There is a write up about this in Adventure Rider http://advwisdom.hogranch.com/Wisdom/ but the link wasn’t working when I just tried it

Final note, if you have never done valves before, try to have some with you who has :rob

so there is a bit of slack ,on one side only at a time .Shall be at it again later in morning .thanks

Put the bike on the centre stand, take both spark plugs out and put the bike into 5th gear (or 6th if you have one)

Turn the back wheel until both of the rockers on one cylinder are rocking (exhaust just starting to close and inlet just starting to open)

The check the clearance on the OTHER cylinder.

Then repeat the process for the other cylinder once you have turned the back wheel to get the other cylinder/rockers (the one you have just adjusted) rocking.

If you have never adjusted valves before it may be worth getting someone to show you the ‘feel’. It is very easy to get it wrong, with the locknut slack you think you have got the right clearance there but, when you tighten the locknut it takes the backlash up on the thread which can ‘lift’ the adjuster 3 – 4 thou

 I’ve just noticed your location……. maybe ignore the above and take it to your nearest BM dealer ;) :D:D:D

Slept on it and had another go this morning . All worked well this time , will be so much easier next time ..Many Thanks

Well done Geno :clap :clap

There's a certain sense of achievement when you do it yourself :thumb

I do hope you did not mean to offend , or suggest that we Irish are stupid and thick as 2 short planks . What has my location got to do with asking for advice.

One of the most level headded Mods of this site lives in Northern Ireland so I certainly don't think you Irish are stupid and thick as 2 short planks.... I wouldn't have offered you the advice on how to do it if I thought that you couldn't do it...... it was just a joke ;)
