Hi all,am starting to do my own servicing. Ive done the oil and filter, changed the plugs, air filter etc. Now am onto the valve clearances. Its a 1997 1100gs. I bought the yellow and white gauges off ebay so here goes this is what ive done. taken spark plugs out, found dead centre on engine. My concern is when ive watched videos they show the feeler gauges going right into the gap but when im trying my feeler guage only goes a few ml . What am I doing wrong . Hope you understand this novice:confused:

TDC needs to be on the correct cylinder, so you may find that you’re 180° out. Try rolling the back wheel around until the valves open/close once again before trying your feeler gauges, and I’ll bet they slide in fully.

That's why you have to adjust them. They get tighter with use (which is the opposite to what I expected when I first did it). Loosen the lock nut and adjust them so that the gauge just fits.

sorted

new day was bit robey yesterday:beer:all sorted thanks paul you where spot on ticks over like a swiss watch.:thumb2

I do the valves and then change the oil, rather than new oil then take the rocker covers off.
