Varadero vs GS

Got to add my 2ps worth here.

About 3 years ago I simehow managed to have a 98 GS1100 with 24K on the clock and a W Honda with 2k in the garage.

To cut a long story short, I decided to trade the GS for something different. The deal was agreed and I rode the GS to the shop. On this ride I decided that I had made a mistake and would rather PX the Honda and keep the BM. I have dealt with the dealer on many occasions but he was not happy with my change of heart. He had already agreed a load off price with the local BMW dealer and didn't want the Varadero even though he was an official Honda dealer.

The Honda is a good bike but they are thirsty and they don't sell in the UK. I also hate chains!

The GS is bigger.. (good or bad depending ) has a bigger tank range. More torque. Weighs more ( good or bad).

Standard 1150GS: 249kg
Varadero (2004 model): 275kg

To all that replied,

Thanks for your input, I have [rightly or wrongly] decided to purchase a GS.
Now I am spending my time perusing MCN, Bike Trader and of course these forum thingies.
When I have made my purchase I will send a piccy.

Thanks again

I make that;

Varadero Dry Weight 241.5kg
GS Dry Weight 232.0kg

Point's the same, though.

mjep. I wrote down de 'wet' figures (varadero from a magazine btw).

I had a 2002 Varadero which was Ok until I managed to wrap it around a tree.

I found the engine nice and quick, pulls very well. Lovely saddle - better than the stock GS IMHO.

But, top heavy - low speed handling is like tight-rope walking. Doesnt like fast sweeping bends - but that might just be me.

Thought about a replacement long and hard. It came down to the intuitive handling and feel of the GS and its' long heritage.

I belive Honda have improved the fuel consumption on the Varadero, and a less then one year old model could be a bargain buy.

But I do recommend the GS, even against a cheap Varadero.

Cheers,

Mike
